Fan remake of Zelda Ocarina of Time for PC stops being developed
The fan remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for PC, which had been in development for years using Unreal Engine 5, had its project halted. This ambitious initiative was led by the developer known as CryZENx, who has now confirmed the end of work.
Considered one of the greatest games of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, originally released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, has always been a milestone for the community of modders and amateur developers. The CryZENx project, which aimed to recreate the title with modern graphics in Unreal Engine 5, gained notoriety and generated several playable demonstrations that showcased iconic locations, dungeons and characters.
After a few years of monitoring the project, CryZENx announced the interruption. The decision did not come from legal action by Nintendo, as many could imagine, but rather from an announcement made by the Japanese company itself. Big N has confirmed that it is working on its own remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, scheduled for release in 2026 on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Although Nintendo only released a brief teaser, promising that the game would be “reborn” without details about the scope or visuals, the news was enough for CryZENx to halt development on its ambitious project. For fans who followed along, the good news is that the developer has made direct links available on its Patreon page to the playable demos, organized chronologically since 2022, covering everything from the first dungeons to locations like Lake Hyrule and the Zora River.
As for the future, CryZENx conducted a poll to decide its next classic remake project. Among options such as Donkey Kong 64, Turok and Sonic Adventure 2, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, originally from GameCube, led the vote with 51% of the votes, indicating what the talented developer’s next adventure will be.
