Blue Ivy’s motivation led Jay-Z to keep dreadlocks for years and then sport an afro in tribute
A recent revelation from Beyoncé, made during the launch of a video for her hair care brand Cécred on Father’s Day, brought to light the emotional reason behind the dreadlocks Jay-Z has had for over eight years. The artist detailed the sentimental context that led the rapper to adopt and, later, modify his hairstyle. The seven-minute recording, titled “The Blueprint,” exposed her husband’s hair journey and family inspiration.
In her statement, Beyoncé explained that Jay-Z’s main motivation for letting her hair grow was precisely so that Blue Ivy would understand the similarity between her hair. The initiative began in 2017, when the girl, then five years old, expressed insecurity about the texture of her own hair. Upon listening to his daughter, the musician also decided to grow dreadlocks, seeking to encourage self-acceptance. The family sought to promote love and appreciation for the child’s natural curls.

About eight years later, just before Jay-Z performed alongside the band The Roots in Philadelphia, the rapper expressed to Beyoncé his desire to get rid of his dreadlocks. The intention was to pay homage to his own father, who traditionally wore an afro and was a Philadelphia sports enthusiast. The singer confessed to having had doubts about the viability of the process, due to the thickness and length of her husband’s hair. She described untangling her hair as a family event, revealing that Blue Ivy also participated, helping with her own hands.
The hair transformation lasted approximately a week, and Beyoncé expressed satisfaction with the final result. She praised Jay-Z’s look on the day of the performance, stating that “his Afro was beautiful from beginning to end.” Although the video serves, in part, as an extended marketing strategy for the Cécred brand, the rarity of public statements from Beyoncé lends additional value to the narrative. This revelation still fuels speculation about possible connections with the artist’s future projects, such as the enigmatic “Ato III”.
