Valve reveals the high cost of the Steam Machine, with a starting price of US$1,049 for the basic 512 GB version
After months of speculation and a series of leaks, Valve has finally released the price of the Steam Machine, its Linux-based desktop console, which also operates as a personal computer.
The final cost of the console, as predicted amid the component crisis, was significantly increased, reaching US$1,049 (approximately R$5,403.82 at current prices) for the version with 512 GB of storage. This value directly reflects the persistent global shortage of memory and the increase in the price of semiconductors, factors that have been putting pressure on prices in the electronics industry.
Along with the announcement of the values, Valve also confirmed the start of the reservation period for the Steam Machine directly through the Steam platform. The company implemented a random purchase queue, a tactic already used successfully at the launch of the Steam Deck to mitigate the actions of bots and resellers.
The $1,049 price only covers the Steam Machine equipped with a 512GB NVMe SSD. For consumers interested in purchasing the Steam Controller together, the price increases to US$1,128 (approximately R$5,809.76). Purchased separately, the control costs US$99, making the package a slightly more advantageous alternative.
For users who require greater capacity, Valve will make an edition available with a 2 TB NVMe SSD. In this case, the price reaches US$1,349, and the package that includes the Steam Controller reaches US$1,428. A differentiator of this version is the inclusion of two extra decorative plates, allowing greater visual customization of the device.
Although the prices are considered high compared to traditional video game consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the Steam Machine differentiates itself due to its proposal. Valve positions the product as a compact gaming computer, capable of running PC games without the need for a conventional tower that takes up a lot of space in the room.
Still, the established value can represent a barrier for many potential buyers. The recent appreciation of components, notably memories, was a crucial factor in increasing the price of the product and impacting the initial availability of units on the market.
According to Valve, the reservation system will be accessible until June 25th to form the first group of buyers. After this date, participants will be selected through a draw, receiving invitations to complete the purchase or be included on a waiting list.
The company also recognized that the global memory shortage directly influenced production capacity. Consequently, there are no guarantees about the volume of units that will be available at launch, a scenario that could result in longer queues than expected by consumers.
