Valve’s Steam Machine arrives to compete in the high-priced console market with a focus on PC games
Valve, the company behind the popular Steam platform, has just introduced the Steam Machine, a new console designed to harmonize the simplicity of traditional video game systems with the flexibility and power of gaming computers.
With an initial cost of US$1,049, the device is positioned at a significantly higher value than a PlayStation 5, presenting a different proposal from those offered by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. Unlike consoles that operate with a restricted catalog, the Steam Machine grants complete access to Steam’s vast library, which houses thousands of game titles. This strategy aims to attract an audience that seeks the freedom of a PC with the convenience of a console, despite the more substantial initial investment.
In terms of design, the equipment has a compact cube format, being smaller than video games currently available on the market. Its design was designed to be integrated into the living room, directly connected to the television. The operating system is SteamOS, based on Linux, and full control of the device can be done using a gamepad, eliminating the need for a keyboard or mouse.
In practice, the Steam Machine looks more like a conventional computer than a game console. Users can attach monitors, keyboard and mouse, transforming it into a functional desktop. Valve describes the initiative as an attempt to replicate the “Steam Deck for TV” experience, bringing PC gameplay to the living room environment in a more accessible way in terms of space and ease of use, despite the cost.
However, the first tests reveal some challenges. Although it demonstrates performance equivalent to that of the PS5 in several games, many titles still require manual adjustments to optimize graphic quality. Reports also indicate compatibility issues and the need for settings that are not common in the standard console experience.

Still, the Steam Machine is seen as one of Valve’s most ambitious ventures since the launch of the Steam Deck. The company expresses confidence that there is demand for a hybrid device, capable of operating as a console and computer simultaneously.
For the initial sales phase, Valve implemented a sweepstakes system. Those interested in purchasing the console must register on one of the reservation lists by June 25th.
Requirements for participation include having an active Steam account and having made at least one purchase on the platform before April 27, 2026. After registrations close, the company will carry out a random selection of potential buyers, who will have 72 hours to complete the acquisition.
To date, there is no official information released by Valve regarding the console’s sales availability for the Brazilian market.
