Chinese giant BYD reaches historic milestone with 7,200 cars in Santa Catarina port
The car manufacturer BYD completed one of the largest car unloading operations ever seen at the Port of Itajaí, in Santa Catarina. The ship BYD Changsha docked last Tuesday (23), bringing with it 7,216 vehicles from the Chinese manufacturer, an important step towards consolidating its expansion in the national market.
Furthermore, the maneuver established a new milestone for the port in 2026, reinforcing Itajaí’s position as one of the largest access points for foreign cars in Brazilian territory. Previously, the port structure had already received other cars through Ro-Ro operations, a modality in which vehicles embark and disembark using their own traction.
The Itajaí Port Superintendency (SPI) indicated that other vessels were crucial to the increase in volumes handled this year. Among them, the Victoria Highway stands out, which brought 2,069 cars in three operations; the Dover Highway, with 1,196 units in two arrivals; Good Wood, responsible for 430 vehicles; and Greater Shanghai, which transported 4,585 cars in a single operation in May.
The large shipment of 7,200 units comes amid a period of accelerated growth for BYD in Brazil. The Chinese automaker intensifies its leadership in the electric and hybrid car markets, a booming segment that demonstrates the Brazilian consumer’s transition to more sustainable technologies. Currently, BYD already occupies the fifth position in car sales in the country, highlighting its direct impact on the reconfiguration of the national automotive scenario and the fierce competition with traditional brands.
