Memes of Endrick and Ancelotti at the World Cup, made by Brazilians, attract the attention of the New York Times
The frustration of Brazilian fans with the little use of Endrick on the field by the Seleção in the World Cup attracted the attention of the renowned New York Times. The North American newspaper highlighted that the memes shared on social media over the last few weeks have turned into an authentic “viral sensation” for this edition of the FIFA tournament.
The origin of this buzz dates back to March, when Endrick, at that point still a candidate for a place on Brazil’s final squad, had the opportunity to play in a friendly against Croatia. In just 14 minutes, he was responsible for conceding a penalty and providing a crucial assist to Gabriel Martinelli.
Since that period, the mass of fans began chanting the name of the 19-year-old striker, who already has a contract with Real Madrid and played last season for Lyon. This clamor was present in the friendly games against Panama and Egypt, as well as in the National Team’s debut match against Morocco in this World Cup.
When asked about Endrick’s slim chances, coach Carlo Ancelotti responded incisively to a journalist. The coach stated that he was not there to discuss the situation of a specific player.
It was from this statement, as pointed out by the New York Times, that what was described as a “meme-apocalypse” was triggered. This digital wave involved videos generated by artificial intelligence, countless creative montages and a massive proliferation of jokes about the situation.
