Take-Two sets the value of GTAuto VI at US$79.99 and confirms launch for November 19
Take-Two Interactive Software has officially announced the price of “Grand Theft Auto VI” at US$79.99, keeping the expected release date of November 19th. This confirmation brings players closer to the most anticipated title in the industry, after a period of speculation and some previous postponements in the franchise.
With this price, “GTA VI” is positioned as one of the most expensive basic editions in the high-end gaming segment. The price exceeds the ceiling of US$69.99, a value that big box office hits like Sony’s “Ghost of Yōtei” and Nintendo’s “Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” have had for years on the market.
For enthusiasts looking for more content, the “Ultimate Edition” of the game will be available for $99.99. This premium version includes exclusive items such as vehicles, weapons and clothing, all integrated into the main narrative that follows the protagonists Jason and Lucia.
In response to the announcement, Take-Two shares registered an increase of almost 3% in pre-market trading, indicating a positive reception from the financial market.
Joost van Dreunen, gaming professor at NYU’s Stern School of Business, commented that the price is unlikely to significantly impact sales, describing the “$80 increase as a rounding error given the huge expectation.” He suggested that this figure could set a new standard for blockbuster titles with little direct competition, but is unlikely to apply to mid-sized studios. “GTA VI doesn’t raise all prices, but it does accentuate the divide between the majors and the minors,” noted van Dreunen. This decision reinforces the trend towards valuing franchises with high market power, potentially making it more difficult for independent developers to compete at the same price level.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting “GTA VI” for more than a decade, and industry analysts predict the game will be an immediate hit, with billions of dollars in sales within the first few days of release, driven by the franchise’s popularity and developer Rockstar Games’ proven track record.
The predecessor, “Grand Theft Auto V”, released in 2013, sold approximately 230 million copies, consolidating itself as one of the best-selling video games of all time.
The importance of “GTA VI” transcends Take-Two, being crucial to the video game market as a whole, as the franchise has historically driven console sales and hardware upgrades for PCs, generating a ripple effect throughout the industry.
Take-Two had announced, earlier this month, that pre-sales for “GTA VI” will begin on June 25th. All pre-purchases made before November 20th will include the Vice City Vintage Pack, offering retro items exclusive to the game. Additionally, anyone who purchases the digital version will receive a free month of subscription to GTA+, a service that grants in-game benefits and access to “GTA V” and other titles.
The first reveal of the game, at the end of 2023, through a trailer that has already accumulated around 300 million views on YouTube, presented a pair of protagonists inspired by “Bonnie and Clyde”, who explore a fictional version of Miami, Florida, called “Vice City”.
