DC Studios and Warner Bros Animation reveal wide range of animated productions, including ‘Absolute Batman’ series and Joker anime
A highly anticipated animated series, inspired by the acclaimed comic book “Absolute Batman”, is currently in development at Warner Bros. Animation in collaboration with DC Studios. The screen adaptation will feature the active participation of the original creators of the graphic novel, screenwriter Scott Snyder and renowned artist Nick Dragotta, ensuring primordial fidelity to the artistic and narrative vision that defined the masterpiece.
This project stands out as one of three new animated shows that solidify DC’s strategic expansion into its animated universe. The release of these new developments was one of the highlights of a joint presentation, held at the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival, scheduled for release in 2026. The choice of the festival highlights the global importance that Warner and DC attribute to these new ventures.
The Annecy event stage hosted industry-leading figures, including Peter Safran, co-president and co-CEO of DC Studios, and Sam Register, president of Warner Animation. New productions boost DC’s animated universe
In addition to the long-awaited “Absolute Batman” series, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation has confirmed the green light for “Joker: Laugh Riot,” a milestone as DC’s first original anime. At the same time, the development of an unprecedented series focused on the adorable superdog Krypto was announced, demonstrating a continued commitment to diversifying and enriching the studio’s animation catalog with creative approaches and distinct appeals to the public.
The comic book “Absolute Batman” represented a complete and bold reinvention of the Dark Knight, reaching newsstands and specialized stores at the end of 2024 and generating a great impact among fans and critics. In this groundbreaking version, Bruce Wayne was portrayed in a radically different light: he lost only one parent, rose as a working-class worker rather than a millionaire heir, and displayed an imposing physique, with no hesitation in confronting criminals head-on. The relevance of this comic book adaptation lies not only in its originality, but in its proven track record of commercial and critical success: the editorial line was crucial for DC Comics to surpass Marvel in market share for the first time in more than a century, and transformed names like Dragotta and other artists involved into major stars in the industry, establishing a new standard for the character.

‘Joker: Laugh Riot’ animated series details reveal thought-provoking plot
“Joker: Laugh Riot” will be executive produced by Jim Krieg, an experienced and successful figure in the DC animation universe, known for his work on acclaimed adaptations such as “Watchmen” and “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” The direction of the anime will be led by Yasuhuro Aoki, and the renowned SOLA Entertainment, from Japan, collaborates directly with Warner Animation and DC Studios on this ambitious project, which is still looking for a broadcaster or streaming platform for its global broadcast.
The central premise of the series is particularly intriguing and subverts traditional expectations about the Clown Prince of Crime: it shows the Joker taking on the unusual role of detective, with the mission of solving a mysterious murder. The official synopsis, released during the Annecy event, captivatingly describes the plot: “When Batman is murdered, the Joker begins a relentless crusade through Gotham’s dark underworld to find the killer who took away his greatest and most challenging adversary. However, as his violent search for answers brings him closer to the stance of a vigilante than a villain, the Joker is forced to confront the disturbing truth that, without Batman, he truly doesn’t know who he is, questioning his own identity and purpose.”
Adventures of superdog Krypto will gain new production for streaming
Finally, in a welcome expansion to DC’s animal universe, Warner Bros. and DC Studios announced that CH Greenblatt, a figure known for his creative work on “SpongeBob” and another animation veteran, has been named executive producer of the as-yet-untitled Krypto series. The superdog has seen increasing prominence in various DC media, from his notable appearance in the Superman film released last year to his fundamental role in the “Supergirl” series, consolidating his importance in the pantheon of heroes.
The official synopsis for the Krypto series details an adventure full of humor and heart: “When he’s not accompanying Superman or Supergirl on their heroic missions, Krypto gets involved with a gang of misfit wannabe criminals who reside on the same block. They quickly discover that he’s a lovable, destructive ball of energy, capable of causing more mayhem than any of them! As he follows them through their misadventures and half-baked plans, Krypto’s pure and genuine nature ends up, little by little, redeeming them from their inclinations towards crime, whether they want this change or not, creating a fun and touching dynamic.”
