In an interview, Sarah Shahi reveals her intense attraction to James Gandolfini during the recording of a sex scene in The Sopranos
In a recent revelation that caught the attention of television fans, actress Sarah Shahi shared details about her brief but impactful appearance on the acclaimed series “The Sopranos.” During an interview with The Bossticks podcast, Shahi recalled a very intense scene with the late protagonist James Gandolfini, who played Tony Soprano.
Sarah Shahi’s appearance occurred in episode number 18 of the sixth season, entitled “Kennedy and Heidi”, originally shown in 2007. In the plot, she played Sonya, a Las Vegas dancer and university student, who was romantically involved first with Christopher Moltisanti, Michael Imperioli’s character, and later with Tony Soprano himself. The actress detailed that her role consisted of being the woman for whom Tony traveled to Las Vegas to announce Christopher’s death.
Asked by presenter Lauryn about the nature of her involvement with Gandolfini’s character, Sarah Shahi confirmed without hesitation the existence of a complete sex scene between them. The actress was full of praise, even declaring: “One of the best kisses I’ve ever received, I must say”, referring to her experience with James Gandolfini.
The artist continued to recount the moments behind the cameras, explaining how an unexpected attraction arose with her co-star. Initially, Shahi pondered the possibility of feeling aroused by a 47-year-old man with Gandolfini’s physical characteristics at the time. However, she quickly admitted to herself that the chemistry on stage was surprising and powerful: “Wow, it worked, a lot!”, she exclaimed.
Shahi highlighted that James Gandolfini was a method actor, immersing himself deeply in his characters and the script. She exemplified this dedication when recalling the scenes in which her characters consumed mushrooms, mentioning that the actor requested props with intense seasonings, such as pepper, to provoke an authentic reaction when eating the food. This dedication to realism not only benefited his own performance, but also created an environment of deep immersion for his castmates, making interactions more genuine and impactful.

The recording of the most intimate parts of the scene was so fluid and organic that the actress revealed a curious detail: even after the technical team shouted “cut”, she and Gandolfini continued kissing. “We did this three, four times, and every time they shouted ‘cut’, we were still making out like hell”, said Shahi, highlighting the intensity and naturalness of the moment.
In another part of the interview, Sarah Shahi expressed her admiration for Gandolfini, who passed away prematurely in Rome, on June 19, 2013, at the age of 51, victim of a heart attack. Despite recognizing that he was a “very problematic man”, Shahi emphasized the affection and esteem that the production team had for the actor, highlighting his incredible character.
To illustrate James Gandolfini’s caring personality, the actress shared a story about the first day of filming the episode when he didn’t show up. Upon returning to her hotel, Sarah Shahi found a bouquet of roses sent by him, accompanied by a simple note. The message read: “Sorry about today. Don’t be nervous because I suck. Love, the chubby one.”
