Tourist causes confusion on the last beach in Europe with gender separation and sparks debate about tradition in Italy
A tourist from Milan was involved in an incident on Pedocin beach, located in Trieste, Italy, when she entered the area historically reserved for men. The episode, which occurred last Saturday (20/6), triggered a series of verbal confrontations and shoves, reigniting discussions about maintaining traditions considered by many to be archaic. Pedocin beach is unique because it is the only one in Europe to still maintain a physical division between visitors, using a wall to separate men from women and children.
The uniqueness of Pedocin beach and its physical division
Bagno Marino La Lanterna, popularly known as Pedocin, is distinguished by a unique feature on the European continent: a wall approximately 2.7 meters high that extends to the Adriatic Sea, strictly separating the men’s area from the women’s area, which also welcomes children under 12 years of age. This peculiarity makes Pedocin a point of interest and controversy, contrasting with most modern beaches.
The venue’s guidelines create distinct environments for its patrons. In the section dedicated to women, it is common to see bathers wearing more discreet swimwear or going topless, without worrying about the male gaze. Interaction between genders is only permitted in sea waters, from the point where the physical barrier ends, offering a neutral space for families and couples.
The historical roots of a coastal tradition
The maintenance of gender separation in Pedocin is not a mere coincidence; it reflects a tradition deeply rooted in local culture, dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. Originally, the beach served as a popular and accessible place for Trieste’s working class, and the division was intended to provide an environment of greater privacy and security, especially for the women and children of the time. This structure allowed women to enjoy sea bathing more freely, away from what was considered a more “exposed” mixed environment.
For many older residents and regulars, Pedocin represents a haven of tranquility and a symbol of the city’s identity. They value the privacy and sense of community that separation offers, seeing it as a guarantee of a space where certain social norms are preserved. This perspective, however, often clashes with more contemporary views on gender equality and individual freedom.
The conflict in the sand and the reactions of those involved
The usual calm on the beach was interrupted when the tourist from Milan decided to stay in the men’s area with her boyfriend. According to reports, the woman spared no criticism of the organization of the place, vociferating against the practice of segregation. “You are living in the Middle Ages! You are a bunch of ignorant sexists! This is a form of discrimination! You should be ashamed!”, the bather allegedly shouted, as reported by the newspaper “Il Piccolo”.
A local woman, who was briefly in the men’s section to help her husband take their disabled son to the bathroom, tried to calm the situation. However, the tense atmosphere quickly escalated into an exchange of shoves and insults. The intervention of other men enjoying the beach was crucial in preventing the confrontation from escalating, temporarily restoring order.
Debate on social media exposes different views
The incident in Pedocin quickly had repercussions on social media, especially on platform X, where the opinions of internet users were intensely divided. While some users praised the tourist’s attitude, describing her as a “rebellious diva” who challenged an obsolete system, most reactions tended to condemn the visitor’s attitude.
Among the comments, many questioned the relevance of tourists imposing their own rules in a place with an established tradition. “It’s true that the rule seems like something from the Middle Ages, but why impose your own rules on a place that already has its own?” asked an internet user. Others did not hesitate to classify the tourist’s attitude as “stupid, arrogant and ignorant”, defending respect for local traditions. A third user summed up the sentiment of many by stating: “It’s an ancient tradition and must be respected. These two Milanese showed all their stupidity. Two imbeciles.”
The future of tradition in a changing world
The episode in Pedocin illustrates the complexity of maintaining certain traditions in the midst of a globalized and constantly changing society, where concepts of individual rights and gender equality are gaining more and more prominence. The beach, although a cultural and historical icon for Trieste, faces the challenge of reconciling its heritage with visitor expectations and contemporary social norms.
The discussion about the validity and relevance of separating genders in public spaces like Pedocin transcends the mere incident, provoking broader reflections on respect for local cultures versus the universality of human rights. The future of this “last stronghold” of gender segregation in Europe will certainly continue to be a point of debate, with the potential for new tensions between tradition and modernity.
