With iOS 27 beta 2 update, Apple reinforces Siri’s blocking of content summaries via URL for sustainable web
A new Apple guideline was inserted into the Siri AI system with the launch of iOS 27 beta 2, changing the way the virtual assistant should process requests to extract or summarize information from URLs. The measure aims to establish a new standard for accessing online content.
New Siri AI limitations regarding internet links
Tech giant Apple made the second beta version of iOS 27 available to developers earlier this week. This update is part of the OS 27 release cycle, which includes several improvements and adjustments.
Among the main innovations presented, the Insights functionality in the Apple Wallet app stands out, the “Write with Siri” suggestion integrated into the iOS and iPadOS keyboard, as well as the ability to perform remote updates on an Apple TV 4K through the Apple Home app.
However, the update also brought several internal changes, one of which was the clarification on how Siri AI should manage requests that involve accessing data contained in a URL. A newly added section to the Siri AI system prompt explicitly instructs:
“Can’t access content behind a URL: When a user gives you a URL and asks you to summarize, read, or extract information from it, inform them that you can’t access web pages. Don’t offer suggestions or workarounds.”
It is important to note that Siri AI already had restrictions on accessing URLs and extracting their content. However, the new guideline deepens this limitation, requiring the assistant to unequivocally declare her inability to respond to such requests and not offer any type of assistance to circumvent this restriction.
Although Apple’s full motivation for this decision has not been detailed, experts point out that the measure may have as its main objective to prevent Siri from following the practice of other artificial intelligence chatbots. Many of these systems summarize and extract content from websites without directing traffic to the original pages, a model that, in the long term, threatens the economic sustainability of the web by drastically reducing direct access to news outlets and content creators.
The Safari browser currently offers summary features powered by Apple Intelligence technology, but this functionality is only accessible when the user is actively viewing the web page in question.
