Challenging course awaits João Fonseca at Wimbledon with possible clash against Novak Djokovic
Rio de Janeiro tennis player João Fonseca, currently in 27th position in the ATP rankings, had his trajectory in the Wimbledon tournament revealed this Friday, which points to a highly difficult route. His debut will be against a former top 10 player, and he could face the likes of Russian Andrey Rublev and Serbian Novak Djokovic in the later stages of the competition.
In the first round, Fonseca will face the experienced Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, 38 years old. Agut, who was already among the top ten in the world and currently ranks 168th, is in his last season on the professional circuit. It will be the first clash between the young Brazilian and the Spanish veteran.

If he advances to the second phase of the tournament, the Brazilian will face the winner of the duel between Dutchman Jesper de Jong and Australian Rinky Hijikata. Fonseca had already had a previous meeting with De Jong, losing in a Challenger tournament in Estoril, Portugal, the previous year.
The projection for the third round indicates a clash with Russian Andrey Rublev, who is the 12th seed in the tournament and will begin his participation against compatriot Roman Safiullin.
Reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon would represent an unprecedented feat in João Fonseca’s career. At this stage, he could cross paths with the tournament’s seven-time champion, Novak Djokovic. The Serbian, who has won titles in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022, will start his campaign against the Chinese Yibing Wu and will then face the winner of the game between the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Frenchman Hugo Gaston. Facing an opponent with Djokovic’s track record and consistency so early in the championship is a monumental test for any tennis player, and for Fonseca, it represents a golden opportunity to measure his level against one of the sport’s greatest legends.
Further down the group, in a possible quarter-final, Fonseca could face Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime, 3rd favorite in the competition, who makes his debut against Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko. The projected semifinal puts Italian Jannik Sinner, current champion of the tournament and number 1 in the world, on the path, who will play his first match against Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
