Police arrest man in Espírito Santo who used ChatGPT to plan murder of his own son
A police operation in the interior of Espírito Santo prevented a family tragedy and possible mass attacks following an international security alert. A 36-year-old man ended up detained by local authorities on charges of arranging the death of his own son, motivated by his refusal to pay the child support demanded by his ex-partner. The detail that caught the attention of global investigators was the method used by the suspect: he detailed the entire criminal scheme in conversations with ChatGPT, the popular artificial intelligence tool developed by the North American company OpenAI.
The arrest took place in the rural area of the municipality of São Gabriel da Palha, located in the northwest region of Espírito Santo, a few hours before the crime was to be carried out. The information was confirmed by delegate Ícaro Olimpio, head of the Specialized Police Station for the Repression of Cybercrimes (DRCC). The state’s Civil Police decided to release the complete details of this complex operation on Thursday (25), showing how digital tracking was fundamental to preserving lives.
Macabre confessions recorded in the artificial intelligence system
During interactions with the virtual robot, the individual did not show any concern about hiding his illicit objectives. Records extracted from the servers show that he was seeking precise guidance on how to hire a hired killer to execute the child, who was the result of a previous relationship and with whom he did not even have frequent contact. The coldness of the commands sent to the artificial intelligence system shocked even agents accustomed to dealing with virtual crimes.
In addition to the family homicide plan, the message history revealed an extremely dangerous profile, with intentions of causing large-scale damage to society. To execute his plans, the man reported to the platform that he already had an arsenal and specific materials, including:
- A firearm that would be ready to be used in attacks.
- Ropes that would be used to immobilize victims.
- Cyanide, a highly toxic chemical substance known for its immediate lethality to the human body.
- Mapped targets that included educational institutions, churches and buildings frequented by public authorities.
The stated objective in these conversations was to maximize the number of casualties during planned raids against the institutions. For security reasons, to protect the threatened child and not disrupt the progress of the judicial process, the identity of the suspect remains under absolute secrecy by the state security authorities.
Information route between United States agencies and Brazil
The discovery of this criminal plot was only possible thanks to security protocols implemented by technology companies, which monitor commands that violate terms of use, especially those that involve imminent risk to life. Upon identifying the intentions of murder and terrorism, the security systems called the FBI, the United States federal police. The North American agency, in turn, issued an international alert on June 16, sending an emergency dossier to Brazilian authorities.
Delegate Ícaro Olímpio explained that the United States police force passed on the technical details to the Brazilian Ministry of Justice. The federal agency processed the data quickly and forwarded the crucial information directly to the Espírito Santo Civil Police, establishing a round-the-clock task force to locate the user before he put the plan into practice.
The company that manages the artificial intelligence provided exact records of interactions, including times and connection data. This sharing of information formed the evidentiary basis necessary for state security forces to act preventively. The case is considered a milestone in modern public security, highlighting how international collaboration and data monitoring in artificial intelligence can neutralize violent crimes before they leave the virtual environment.
Police approach and the suspect’s reaction at the time of capture
With the digital evidence consolidated, the Court issued preventive arrest and search and seizure warrants against the resident of São Gabriel da Palha. The capture operation, which had the tactical support of the municipality’s own police station, was launched on June 19th. Security agents set up a siege on the rural property and intercepted the agricultural worker exactly as he was preparing to leave his residence towards his workplace.
At the time of the approach, the man’s behavior followed the pattern of many people investigated for cyber crimes. He vehemently denied any involvement in the murder plans and tried to deny that he was the author of the messages sent to ChatGPT. However, the police presented the vast data archive provided by international authorities, which made the initial defense version presented at the scene unfeasible.
According to delegate Olímpio, the wealth of technical details and cross-referencing of information gave the team absolute certainty that they had neutralized a real threat. The quick action prevented the man from contacting local criminals to order his son’s death or starting attacks on the public buildings mentioned in the conversations.
Next steps in the investigation and analysis of seized materials
The individual was arrested for committing a crime and was immediately sent to the Espírito Santo prison system. The Civil Police based the arrest request on a series of serious criminal charges, including threat, attempted murder and incitement to crime. Although the arrest has already been made and the suspect has been removed from circulation, the police investigation continues to exhaust all lines of investigation.
The formal indictment of the man awaits the completion of fundamental technical steps. All electronic objects and physical materials collected from the residence during the execution of the search and seizure warrant were sent to the state forensic laboratories. Experts are now working on extracting data from cell phones and computers to see if there were other people involved in the scheme.
Authorities are also seeking to confirm the physical existence of the weapon and cyanide mentioned in conversations with artificial intelligence. Only after the issuance of the definitive technical reports and the completion of additional steps will the investigation be finalized and sent to the judiciary for the criminal proceedings to proceed.
