The choice of Althorp House, rather than a royal residence, is seen as a powerful message aimed at both King Charles and Prince William, according to experts.
This trip will mark the Duke of Sussex’s first return, accompanied by his wife and two children, to his home country in four years, since the couple began living in California. The visit is timed to celebrate the one-year countdown to the Birmingham 2027 Invictus Games. Experts analyze the difficulty of reconciliation between Prince William and Prince Harry
Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their two young children are considering staying at Princess Diana’s historic estate during her visit to the United Kingdom in July 2026, multiple royal experts told Fox News Digital.
An apparent coincidence of dates directed the spotlight to Althorp House. The property, located approximately one hour from Birmingham, is scheduled to close to visitors on July 10th and 11th, the period when Harry and Meghan are expected to be in the United Kingdom, as reported by People magazine.
Fox News Digital reached out to a spokesperson for Althorp for comment. An Archewell representative told Fox News Digital that, for security reasons, the organization would not comment on the couple’s accommodations.
Prince Harry is expected to return to the United Kingdom in July with his family. However, royal watchers say a reunion with his brother, Prince William, remains unlikely due to the persistent rift between the two.
For Prince Harry, Althorp represents a vital connection to his mother’s legacy, as well as being one of the few private places intrinsically linked to her memory.

“Harry can interact with his mother’s story on his own terms, without the formalities imposed by the royal household,” explained British journalist and photographer Helena Chard to Fox News Digital.
She added: “Althorp offers the refuge of privacy and isolation, and a direct link to the memory of your mother, something that Buckingham Palace, as a fully functioning royal center with a vast office complex, cannot provide.”

She emphasized that the Sussexes can make their own rules there, and Harry has repeatedly expressed his desire for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to know Diana’s story.

Meghan Markle’s last official visit to the UK was in September 2022, for charity events. The trip was drastically altered by the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, and the couple remained in the country for the monarch’s funeral.
Althorp is Diana’s burial place, a preserved space away from the eyes of the media. The family visit would take place just after the late Princess of Wales’s birthday on July 1, and would be particularly meaningful for 5-year-old Lilibet, whose middle name pays tribute to her grandmother.
Helena Chard also highlighted that the property would offer a sanctuary for the Sussexes, who “strictly protect the children’s privacy, exactly as they wish”.
Previously, reports indicated that King Charles had proposed accommodation on a royal estate to the Sussexes, an offer that received no public response. Fox News Digital contacted Buckingham Palace looking for a position, and was informed that the monarch had already offered Harry residence at Buckingham Palace, a proposal he declined.
Royal commentator Amanda Matta told Fox News Digital that “staying at Althorp, rather than a royal estate, would certainly signal that Harry is prioritizing his connection with Diana and his family’s privacy over institutional alignment at this time.”

Amanda Matta detailed that “Buckingham Palace has undergone extensive renovations and, although it remains the official London residence of Harry’s father, the king, its use has declined since Charles’ accession to the throne. He prefers to live in Clarence House or Highgrove. Even Prince William has indicated that Buckingham Palace will not be his primary residence as king.”
Matta clarified that Althorp is just “one of several options for the Sussex family’s stay in the United Kingdom.”
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reside in California with their two young children.
“It’s the perfect environment for Archie and Lilibet to find out about ‘Grandma Diana’ because her story is physically present there,” Matta said. She added that the choice “also allows for a private introduction to that side of the family, without the pressure of official royal protocol and the need to manage the delicate relationships between the Spencers and Windsors.”
Amanda Matta said staying at Althorp would make a “chance meeting” between the Sussexes and any other member of the royal family unlikely.
“The schedules of senior members of the royal family are strictly controlled, and if they don’t want to meet Harry and Meghan, they simply won’t,” Matta explained. She concluded: “As it’s summer, they’ll also have the perfect excuse from the busy social season or private family vacation.”
