Tragedy in Venezuela: player’s wife is fatal victim of devastating earthquake; baby daughter survives the rubble
A tragedy shook Venezuela this week with the confirmation of the death of the wife of Venezuelan football player Hector Bello. She was one of the victims of the strong earthquake that hit the country last Wednesday (24), as reported by the local press.
The couple’s daughter, still a child, was found alive amid the rubble. The building where the family lived, located in the state of La Guaira, one of the areas hardest hit by the tremors, suffered a complete collapse.
Hector Bello, 28 years old, plays as a defender and is currently without a club. Previously, until 2025, the athlete defended the colors of Bolívar SC, a team based in Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela.
In another account of the impact of the catastrophe, Argentine player Lucas Trejo also revealed that members of his own family were missing after the earthquakes.
Historical impact of earthquakes in Venezuela
On Wednesday night (24), the northern region of Venezuela, which includes the capital Caracas, was hit by two consecutive earthquakes. The tremors caused not only deaths, but also the collapse of buildings and a vast zone of destruction in and around the city, marking the most intense earthquakes recorded in the country in more than a century.
The Venezuelan government released the most recent balance, indicating a total of 589 deaths due to the tremors, in addition to 2,980 injured and around 200 individuals trapped under the rubble. Authorities estimate that at least 250 buildings were completely collapsed or severely damaged, demonstrating the unprecedented magnitude of the devastation.
Rescue teams face a race against time to locate the missing and extract victims from the wreckage. Groups organized by citizens in the affected areas, dedicated to searching for relatives and acquaintances, have already accounted for an alarming number of more than 24 thousand missing people.
Given the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe, several countries, such as the United States and Brazil, have already announced the sending of teams and support to assist in complex search and rescue operations.
