Venezuela records new 4.0 magnitude earthquake amid searches for thousands after deadly tremors
Venezuela was once again the scene of a seismic shock, following a series of tremors that resulted in hundreds of fatalities and thousands of missing people. The Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (FUNVISIS) confirmed that the new event, measuring 4.0 degrees in magnitude, occurred on Thursday afternoon (25/6) in its territory.
The report released by the institution detailed that the seismic incident occurred at 3:14 pm local time, equivalent to 2:14 pm in Brasília time zone. According to the parameters of the Richter Scale, an earthquake of this intensity is classified as mild.
FUNVISIS pointed to the city of Bachaquero, in the state of Zulia, as the point where the event was noticed. This location is approximately 300 kilometers from Yumare, a region that was the epicenter of previous large earthquakes of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude in the country.
According to FUNVISIS, the tremor recorded this afternoon appears to be a replica of the earthquakes that occurred the previous day.
Such events are aftershocks, characterized by reduced intensity, which usually appear after a main earthquake of great magnitude, indicating the slow release of energy in the geological fault.
Venezuelan authorities reported a provisional death toll of 188 deaths due to the earthquakes that devastated the northern coastal region of the country.
The total number of missing remains without official confirmation. However, civil initiatives in the country already indicate that between 30,000 and 40,000 people are missing, a number not yet approved by the Venezuelan government.
Given the seriousness of the situation, the country’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, instituted a state of emergency throughout Venezuela.
