7-year-old son weighing 116 kg: parents are accused of murder and torture of Casper O’Brien in Michigan after death due to obesity
A couple was arrested in the state of Michigan, in the United States, on charges of being responsible for the death of their son. The child died due to a heart condition severely aggravated by morbid obesity. Casper O’Brien, who was 7 years old and weighed approximately 250 pounds, died in November 2025, as revealed by the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office. His parents, Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, face charges of second-degree murder, torture and three counts of second-degree child abuse, and remain jailed without bail.
Post-mortem medical analysis indicated that the cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease that affects the heart’s pumping capacity, with extreme obesity as a determining factor. Experts found that the boy was completely immobile, suffering from bedsores, skin lesions and other serious health problems, the result of a prolonged lack of care on the part of his parents.
“This is a deeply regrettable and appalling case involving two parents’ wanton and willful neglect of the health, well-being and medical needs of their child,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton told People magazine.
The investigation detailed that Casper was fed an inadequate diet daily, consisting of large portions of potato chips, bulky packets of processed snacks, apple juice and flavored sparkling water. The accusation points out that the boy did not receive appropriate nutrition or encouragement for any physical activity, which led to a rapid and drastic weight gain. In February 2024, he weighed around 47 kilos and, in less than two years, his weight had exceeded 115 kilos, as reported by a prosecutor to the website TMZ. The speed of weight gain illustrates a pattern of severe and ongoing neglect, indicating a critical period where intervention could have been instrumental in saving the child’s life.
Additionally, the Prosecutor’s Office stated that the parents neglected the boy’s medical care, despite the family having a health plan. Casper reportedly visited the doctor only once, and was then referred to a pediatric endocrinologist, an appointment that was never made. The investigators also highlighted that he did not have a regular pediatrician, did not attend school and was non-verbal autistic.
Prosecutor David Leyton reiterated his description of Casper’s death as “a sad and horrific case involving the wanton and intentional neglect of two parents regarding the care, well-being and medical needs of their son,” according to a statement obtained by NBC News.

Unsanitary Conditions in Michigan Family Home
The condition of the family’s residence, located in Flint Township, was also a concern for authorities. Police and emergency crews who responded to the call found the property in a state of extreme accumulation, full of trash and dirt. The volume of debris was so large that it made it difficult for rescuers to access the boy. The only bathroom in the house, according to investigation reports, had a broken toilet bowl and was covered in feces.
Casper shared a makeshift bed with his parents and his 5-year-old sister. The girl also lived in precarious conditions and had no access to school. Authorities found no previous records of child protective services intervention at the scene. Both children had health insurance, but lacked regular medical care, as reported by media outlets in the USA.
At a press conference about the case, prosecutor David Leyton called the situation an example of extreme and deliberate negligence. He mentioned that the couple even made a call to a veterinarian for the family dog the morning Casper suffered cardiac arrest, but had not sought appropriate medical care for their son over the years. For the Prosecutor’s Office, the sequence of omissions and mistreatment justifies the charges of murder, torture and child abuse.
Damien and Jessica O’Brien remain in custody and are scheduled to appear in court next Thursday, July 2. The couple will not be able to obtain provisional release on bail.
