Death of a teenager in São Carlos is attributed to intestinal torsion according to a report; city hall will investigate UPA
A recent expert report confirmed that the death of young Caio Vinicius de Oliveira, aged 15, was caused by an intestinal torsion. The boy had received medical care at the UPA (Emergency Care Unit) in São Carlos, in the interior of São Paulo, the day before his death.

The final medical analysis established intestinal torsion as the reason for death. This serious condition is characterized by the rotation of a portion of the intestine on its own axis, preventing the passage of food and, potentially, cutting off the blood supply to the area involved.
The municipal administration announced that it will initiate an administrative inquiry. The Municipal Health Department declared that it will review the care offered to the young person, examining the medical records, the procedures applied and all records relating to the situation.
The investigative process will focus on detecting possible failures. In an official statement, the municipal body explained that intestinal torsion is an uncommon condition and its first signs can be difficult to identify, which complicates the initial diagnosis. If irregularities in medical care are found, appropriate administrative measures will be taken.
Reconstitution of the facts that preceded Caio’s death
The young man felt unwell in the early hours of Wednesday, the 24th. According to police records, Caio Vinicius de Oliveira had severe abdominal pain and vomiting, and was then taken by his family to the UPA in Vila Prado, located in São Carlos.
After being treated, Caio was medically discharged. At the aforementioned health unit, the teenager received intravenous medication, was under observation for approximately two hours and was then released.
The following day, the teenager felt unwell again. According to the police report, Caio described symptoms such as dizziness, chest discomfort and breathing problems, shortly before fainting. The Samu team was called to provide assistance.
Health professionals tried to revive the young man at the scene. Rescuers performed resuscitation maneuvers, but Caio showed no reaction. A doctor from an Advanced Support Unit certified the death.
The teenager’s relatives question the conclusion about the cause of death. The initial record indicated “natural death”, however, the family maintains that there was negligence in the UPA and Samu care services.
The young man’s sister, Caroliny Oliveira, used a digital platform to denounce what she considers medical negligence. She declared that her brother could be alive if not for “extreme medical negligence” during the care provided.
The case is under investigation by the Civil Police. The corporation classified the incident as a “suspicious death” and is awaiting the completion of expert reports to continue the open investigation.
The teenager’s burial took place last Friday. Caio’s body was buried in the Santo Antônio de Pádua Municipal Cemetery, located in São Carlos.
