Researchers call this disparity the Brain Age Gap (BAG), indicating that when the brain is biologically older, structural modifications that are precursors to cognitive decline may already be active, often years before they become evident.
To illustrate, the doctor draws a parallel with two vehicles manufactured in the same year. One of them, well cared for and with up-to-date maintenance, while the other was exposed to adverse conditions and neglect, resulting in much more severe wear, despite the same age.
Dr. Bhagat emphasizes that the brain operates in a similar way, and the decisions made daily regarding lifestyle are decisive for it to remain healthy or suffer preventable damage.
The impacts of accelerated brain aging on health
Studies involving brain scans of more than 40,000 people revealed that each additional year that the brain appears older than an individual’s actual age significantly increases the risks to their health.

According to Dr. Bhagat, “each year of accelerated brain aging increases the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by approximately 16.5% and the risk of overall mortality by almost 12%.”
The findings indicate that brain health transcends the issue of memory, being intrinsically connected to longevity and general physical condition.
The 2.5-year milestone in brain age disparity
Brain aging generally happens progressively, but recent research points to a significant turning point.
“When the brain exceeds the person’s actual age by about 2.5 years, cognitive deterioration appears to intensify more rapidly,” says Dr. Bhagat.
Above this threshold, people often experience a more pronounced decrease in reaction time, information processing speed, attention, and memorization capacity. A greater disparity in brain age is also linked to an increased risk of stroke and major depressive disorders.

The main factors that drive premature brain aging often reside in habits that are widespread in contemporary society, which end up being neglected by most people.

“Continuous stress saturates the body with cortisol, a hormone that can progressively reduce the size of the hippocampus, the brain area essential for memory,” details Dr. Bhagat.

The good news is that accelerated brain aging is not an irreversible condition.
“The brain has a remarkable ability to adapt and restructure itself, a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity or cognitive resilience,” explains Dr. Bhagat.
