LG Display has revealed the findings of a study indicating an improvement in practical gaming performance as monitor refresh frequency increases. The company aims to expand its presence in the high-end gaming monitor segment, validating through experiments the effectiveness of its OLED screens with high refresh rates.

This Thursday, July 9, LG Display informed about the publication of a scientific work. The study details how the refresh rate of dedicated gaming monitors influences performance in gameplay sessions and was submitted to global academic meetings. Titled “Analysis of the Impact of Refresh Rate on the Performance of First-Person Shooters (FPS)”, the document focuses on this specific genre.

For the research, a blind test methodology was adopted, involving 31 adult participants. Players were invited to try FPS titles in four different refresh frequency settings: 60Hz, 240Hz, 360Hz and 480Hz, to then evaluate both performance during the game and their own user satisfaction.

The data obtained in the experiment reinforced the observation that gaming performance tends to improve significantly as the update rate increases. In measurements, the “hit score”, which indicates the number of enemies hit, showed an increase of up to 38% at 480Hz settings, when compared to 60Hz. In an even more detailed analysis, there was an improvement of around 10% in the 480Hz environment, even compared to a 240Hz rate, already considered high level.

User perception corroborated the technical findings, presenting consistent results. Participants reported that as the refresh rate was increased, the fluidity of image transitions became more noticeable and tracking moving targets was made easier, resulting in a greater overall liking for the experience.

LG Display clarified that such findings are due to the intrinsic properties of OLED technology. According to the company, an increase in the refresh rate contributes to reducing input lag, which is the interval between the signal and its display on the screen. Furthermore, motion blur, common in fast scenes, is minimized, which increases responsiveness and visual clarity. Practical tests confirmed that, at 480 Hz, the input lag was more than 10 milliseconds lower than at 60 Hz.

Inspired by the findings of this survey, the corporation intends to significantly reinforce the competitive advantage of its OLED devices designed for gaming, which incorporate high refresh rates.

In a previous achievement, dating back to May, LG Display had already created a “27-inch OLED DFR panel with 540/720Hz refresh rate.” This component reached the mark of the highest global update frequency and was awarded the highest distinction, “Screen of the Year”, by the Society for Information Display (SID).

Choi Young-seok, who serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at LG Display, said, “Building on our market expertise, including the 27-inch 720Hz OLED DFR monitor, recognized for the world’s highest refresh rate, we will ensure the development of crucial technologies for the displays of the future, while continually expanding our technological leadership in the gaming display segment.”
