A student at the St. Petersburg State University of Industrial and Technical Design, Sofia Danilova, is the mind behind the July 10 release of “Neuro Detective,” a 2D detective game with a post-noir theme. Using the Unity platform, the immersive project follows a private investigator in search of a young woman who disappeared in an enigmatic way. To bring her universe to life, Sofia produced more than a hundred visual elements, including illustrations, posters, character concepts, detailed settings, animations, cinematic sequences and complete dialogues.

What defines the post-noir aesthetic in games

The post-noir aesthetic, chosen for the game, is based on a dense atmosphere and nuances that convey oppression and pessimism. Narratives of this style often feature characters with dubious morality, hiding vices or a dark past. To accentuate the mystery and tension, creators often employ unusual framing, exploring intense contrasts of light and shadow. Originating in literature, the genre expanded to cinema, comic books, graphic novels and, more recently, to the world of video games.

Creation of detailed characters and scenarios

In the development process, the designer started with the conception of the protagonist, private detective John Jow. He was designed with broad shoulders and an athletic build, and his name was intentionally chosen to refer to unidentified or missing individuals. His appearance was designed to evoke mystery and melancholy, highlighting his profession through a long coat, a striking hat and a deep gaze. Next, the student finalized the character design with a complete 360-degree representation. She later sketched out the game’s environment, creating a long street with smaller branches and the detective’s dilapidated residence, adorned with elements such as graffiti, boarded-up windows, and a mailbox overflowing with mail.

Reflections on the impact of technology on human life

“Video games have always been present in my journey. They have the ability to go beyond mere entertainment, acting as a means to transmit messages and provoke meaningful reflections”, said Sofia. She added that “Neuro Detective” delves into the repercussions of technology on human existence, questioning the limits between man and machine with themes such as body modification, the integration of superchips and the creation of digital copies of individuals. The relevance of these themes is accentuated in the current context, where artificial intelligence and biotechnology are increasingly blurring the boundaries of what we consider human.

Game mechanics and user interaction

The developer implemented the game’s central mechanics, which consists of interacting with Non-Playable Characters (NPCs) through dialogue. Some of these characters can be accessed immediately, making it easier to advance the narrative and discover secondary details. Others are released as the player completes missions, using the A/D keys to move the protagonist left and right. Furthermore, Sofia designed interaction with various objects in the scenario, making it possible to read descriptions, listen to comments from the main character and use or activate inventory items. To enrich the plot with twists, certain areas of the game contain blocked doors or devices that require the solution of a puzzle to activate.

Visual identity and promotional materials for the project

During the design phase, the student improved and completely vectorized the “Neuro Detective” logo. The upper part, “Neuro”, was designed with the Monteiro Lobato font, characterized by its classic decorative style and accentuated serifs. The second half of the name uses the Market Deco font, which refers to a retro style with Art Deco influences. The union of the two sections of the logo is symbolized by neural connections, which function as connecting wires. Sofia also developed a collection of promotional posters for the video game, suitable for use as avatars on platforms such as VK Gaming and Steam, as well as materials for advertising campaigns in print and outdoor media. She plans to expand this series to include a total of five posters, each highlighting characters crucial to the story.

Detailed animation and next steps for launch

The creation of the animations was carried out by the author using the Moho Animation software. The platform is organized into distinct areas, including a timeline for keyframes, a window dedicated to layers and brush settings, and a toolbar. Through this program, she was able to simulate frame-by-frame animation with hand-drawn drawings using vectors, and also employed the image slicing technique, where existing illustrations were segmented to optimize the animated implementation.

In the game, characters’ speeches that have keywords or need emphasis are formatted in bold. Attributes for special abilities are differentiated by specific colors: Psyche in purple, Engine in yellow, Physique in red, and Intelligence in blue.

“This is the first game in my portfolio that I aim to transform into a complete interactive project”, declared Sofia, expressing her vision. She highlighted the need to form an aligned team and bring together a complete cast of voice actors, with some auditions already carried out. The next steps include finalizing the game concept, improving the interface and adding original textures and attributes. After the final rendering of all visual and sound elements, the game will be ready to enter the national market as a debut project.
