Apple unveiled the next major software update for iPads, iPadOS 27, during its developer conference in June. Although the system has not yet been officially launched and will only reach users in September, a beta version is now available for testing.

As expected, the new operating system will perform better on Apple’s latest tablet models. However, many owners of slightly older iPads may be wondering whether their current devices will also receive the update.

Which iPad models will receive the iPadOS 27 system?

Unlike iOS, the system requirements for iPadOS 27 are not the same as those for iPadOS 26. Support has been discontinued for several existing iPad models. Devices with Apple A12 or Apple A12X chips, for example, will not be compatible with the new operating system.

Among the models that will lose support for the update are the 8th generation iPad, the 5th generation iPad mini, the 3rd generation iPad Air, the 1st generation 11-inch iPad Pro and the 3rd generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Check out the full list of devices compatible with iPadOS 27:

Even with compatibility, it is essential to note that not all of these iPads will have access to all Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features. To use these advanced features, you will need an iPad with an M1 chip or later, or the latest version of the iPad mini (7th generation), which has the A17 Pro chip. This distinction is crucial, as running iPadOS 27 does not automatically guarantee access to all of its latest innovations.
