Hundreds of technology enthusiasts formed an unusual line in Helsinki, Finland for the launch of the new Jolla Phone. The event, which brought together around 500 people, marked the return of a European smartphone after 13 years, standing out for its own operating system, Sailfish OS, and a strong emphasis on privacy and technological sovereignty. This resurgence is notable for being driven by the community rather than large marketing campaigns, cementing Jolla as a robust alternative to the global market giants.

Strategic return with a focus on the community

Jolla, a Finnish company, has had a unique moment in the European mobile industry with the arrival of its latest smartphone. Exactly 13 years after the launch of the original model, the fan community gathered again at Narinkkatori Square, the same location as the inaugural event, to celebrate a device that represents independence in the technological scene. The enthusiasm was such that the minimum objective of 2,000 pre-orders was surpassed in less than 48 hours, and reservations exceeded 15 thousand units through “word of mouth”.

The new Jolla Phone arrives in a significantly different market environment than in 2013, when the idea of an independent European cell phone seemed premature. Currently, issues such as data privacy and technological sovereignty have gained global priority, driving the demand for alternatives to the duopoly formed by Google and Apple. The company demonstrates remarkable financial strength, operating with positive cash flow and without relying on venture capital financing or bank loans.

Private by design: the Sailfish OS system differentiator

One of the pillars of the new Jolla Phone is its operating system, Sailfish OS, a Linux-based platform developed as an open alternative. This system is designed to guarantee user privacy, with Jolla ensuring that it does not collect data in the background, has no hidden analytics and does not require the creation of Apple or Google accounts to operate. This approach aims to give users unprecedented control over their digital information.

The final assembly of the device is carried out in Salo, Finland, in the same factory where Nokia, one of the most iconic brands in the history of telephony, produced its equipment. A striking physical feature of the device is the privacy switch. This feature allows the user to instantly turn off the smartphone’s microphone, camera and other sensors, without the need to access menus or third-party software, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to personal safety.

Customization and compatibility with Android

Despite not having its own application store, the Sailfish OS system expands its usefulness by supporting Android applications through AppSupport technology. This functionality is crucial for users, allowing access to essential services such as banking applications, messaging platforms and even Google Maps, without compromising the privacy philosophy of the native system. This compatibility is an important bridge towards adopting an alternative system.

The launch of the Jolla Phone also revives the “The Other Half” (TOH) concept, which consists of smart covers. These skins are automatically recognized by the device and can change not only the look, but also the environment and even the system music, offering an in-depth personalization experience. Orange, Kaamos Black and Snow White covers are currently available, with a special Inari Blue edition for the first 10,000 community members. Jolla plans to launch new configurable covers, which could even change the phone’s behavior for different usage profiles, such as a safe night mode or a simplified interface for children and the elderly.

Hardware Specifications for Durability

The Jolla Phone’s hardware was designed with the philosophy of independence and longevity in mind, reminiscent of Nokia’s classics due to the possibility of user maintenance.

  • Screen:6.36-inch AMOLED
  • Processor:MediaTek Dimensity 7100 5G
  • RAM memory:8GB or 12GB options
  • Internal storage:256GB
  • Battery:5,450 mAh, user replaceable
  • Main camera:50 MP with Sony sensor
  • Wide Angle Camera:13 MP

This configuration aims to offer robust performance for daily tasks, while focusing on durability and repairability, points that stand out in a market dominated by difficult-to-maintain devices.

Launch and access to the new device

The first units of the Jolla Phone are already being delivered to consumers who placed the pre-order. The company has implemented a vacancy system for new batches, with the next round of deliveries scheduled for October. The smartphone will be sold in European Union countries, in addition to Norway, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Prices for the latest pre-orders start at 649 euros, positioning the device as a premium option in the smartphone segment. The gradual sales strategy and focused distribution reflect Jolla’s community-first approach and controlled launch.
