The international religious music scene lost one of its great exponents with the death of Brian Doerksen, at the age of 60. Confirmation of death occurred just four days after the artist shared with the public that he was facing terminal cancer, ending a career of immense impact in the gospel segment.

The Canadian composer took his last breath peacefully in his sleep, in the comfort of his home located in the city of Abbotsford, in the province of British Columbia. An official note released on the family’s digital platforms attested that the definitive farewell took place on July 21st.

According to the message shared on Facebook, the musician maintained his affectionate essence until the final moments of his life. The text highlighted that he continued to encourage friends and family to live truthfully, in addition to demonstrating deep gratitude for the entire medical team who tirelessly cared for him during his treatment.

The worsening of the singer’s clinical condition took many fans by surprise, as the first statement about the seriousness of the situation had been published recently, on July 17th. At that time, relatives reported that doctors had classified the tumor as stage four, indicating metastasis and few therapeutic options.

Famous worldwide for singing the anthem “Purify My Heart”, the veteran had already been struggling with a series of physical weaknesses since the beginning of the year. The first more severe symptoms began to appear in February, forcing the artist to seek specialized assistance.

A virtual fundraising campaign created to pay for the treatments detailed the extent of the problem, revealing that imaging tests detected a tumor in the pelvic region. Furthermore, the reports showed lesions spread across the liver, lungs and areas adjacent to the heart, highlighting the aggressiveness of the pathology.

On a personal level, the Canadian is survived by his wife, Joyce, with whom he built a large family of six children, now all adults. A notable feature of the couple’s life was the diagnosis of all their heirs with fragile X chromosome syndrome, the most common hereditary cause of intellectual disability in the world, which always required extraordinary dedication from the parents.

The instrumentalist’s discography is vast and reflects decades of continuous work, totaling more than three dozen phonographic projects released between 1989 and 2025. His latest studio record, called “Love For A Lifetime”, recently hit the market and is now established as the final testament of his art.

The record label Vineyard Worship, a Christian label that distributed 28 of the artist’s albums between 1989 and 2002, issued a public statement lamenting the departure of one of its greatest talents. The company highlighted the incalculable weight of this loss for the international evangelical community.

In a moving tribute posted on social media, the institution described the musician as a true patriarch of the worship movement that gained strength in the 1990s. The note emphasized that his songwriting ability, combined with his spirit of leadership and friendship, shaped not only the Vineyard’s sonic identity, but influenced congregations around the planet.

The commemorative text also made a point of listing absolute classics of his own, such as “Come, Now Is the Time to Worship”, “Refiner’s Fire” and “Faithful One”. These compositions have been described as powerful spiritual tools that have helped millions of believers establish a more intimate connection with the sacred over the past few decades.

To conclude the tribute, representatives of the music label expressed immense gratitude for the Canadian’s brilliant career. They reaffirmed the certainty that the vast musical catalog left by the artist will continue to serve as a beacon of hope and faith for future generations of Christians.
