IPhone 18 Pro Max camera will have variable aperture, leaked document reveals
A set of internal files from Tata Electronics, leaked on July 17, 2026, revealed that the “iPhone 18 Pro Max” will have a main camera sensor with a variable aperture. The information was found in an Image Signal Processor (ISP) diagnostic log, confirming a highly expected feature for the device.
The diagnosis indicates that this will be the only significant change in the cameras of the next model. The device will come equipped with a new main sensor, the Sony IMX905, which will replace the component present in the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The other sensors, however, should not undergo modifications.
With regard to this new sensor, the record details that the size of the pixels remains at 1.22 micrometers (μm). This suggests that the core innovation is limited to variable aperture, ruling out expectations for a physically larger sensor or other major transformations.

The document, in fact, confirms compatibility with variable aperture. This occurs through a calibration block that stores data from the actuator that operates the opening mechanism in the sensor’s non-volatile memory.
Furthermore, the report specifies that the telephoto sensor will retain its original 0.7μm pixels, with the possibility of them being grouped to generate 1.4μm pixels. The optical stabilization system, in turn, will continue to employ a three-axis spherical actuator, similar to the previous model.
