Chinese plan proposes using nuclear bombs to save Earth from giant asteroids

Asian researchers have formulated a new planetary defense tactic focused on protecting humanity if a space rock of colossal proportions comes on a direct collision course with our planet. Faced with an apocalyptic scenario that would threaten the continuity of life on Earth, the group concluded that the use of nuclear devices emerges as the most effective alternative, having the capacity to both disintegrate the threat and push it onto a safe trajectory.

The guidelines for this ambitious project were detailed in a scientific article published in the academic journal Space: Science & Technology, signed by experts linked to the Chinese Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology. The document argues that, depending on the time window available between the discovery of the celestial body and the likely shock, the deployment of atomic warheads may be the only technological resource capable of preventing a mass extinction.

Interception Alternatives to Neutralize Space Rocks

Assessing the current state of aerospace engineering, the project’s creators structured two distinct approaches to deal with the imminent danger: an immediate frontal impact explosion or a programmed detonation after piercing the asteroid’s surface. According to the team’s technical analysis, the second option, which involves excavating the target before releasing the payload, has considerably higher success rates.

  • In the pre-drilling strategy, the space probe would operate autonomously to identify the ideal crater location, inserting the warhead into the deepest layers to ensure that the shock wave and extreme heat destroy the internal structure of the rock.
  • This level of precision would guarantee the total annihilation of space bolides measuring up to 100 meters wide, turning them into harmless dust before they reach the Earth’s atmosphere. For comparison purposes, the meteor that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013, was only 20 meters wide and left more than a thousand injured, highlighting the urgency of neutralizing larger targets.
  • When the target passes the 1 kilometer mark in length, the force generated by the underground explosion would not destroy the object, but would create a thrust powerful enough to divert its original path, ensuring it passes far from Earth’s gravity.
  • For the interception of cosmic giants to work, scientists emphasize that ground-based telescopes need to identify the orbital anomaly several years in advance, allowing the construction and launch of the interceptor mission.

Although the mathematical models present an optimistic scenario, those responsible for the study are keen to emphasize that the entire mechanics of the plan still reside in the field of computer simulations. To date, the only successful practical planetary defense initiative has been the DART mission, carried out by the North American space agency NASA in 2022, which used only the kinetic impact of a spacecraft — without explosives — to slightly alter the orbit of the small asteroid Dimorphos.

Getting the Chinese project off the ground and turning it into an operational mission would require overcoming monumental obstacles, starting with the unpredictability of the chemical and structural composition of each asteroid, which directly affects how the fragments would spread through space after an explosion. Furthermore, the logistics of sending nuclear weapons out of Earth’s orbit involve extremely high risks of accidents during launch, also coming up against complex international treaties on the demilitarization of space.

The influence of the schedule on the choice of defensive tactics

Another crucial point raised by the Asian research is that the choice of interception method will depend entirely on the clock. Engineers ran virtual simulations covering widely varying windows of opportunity, from an emergency warning just a year in advance to more comfortable scenarios with two decades of preparation before the projected impact.

If humanity has the luxury of time on its side, the deep excavation technique is the priority as it maximizes detonation energy, although it requires a heavier and more complex spacecraft. On the other hand, if a lethal asteroid were discovered by surprise, the only viable solution would be a direct and superficial attack, which does not require drilling probes and allows the rocket to be assembled and fired in record time.

The big problem with the emergency approach is the lack of control over the exact point of the explosion, resulting in a much lower energy transfer to the space rock, which may not be enough to avoid global catastrophe. Due to these physical and technological limitations, the Chinese Academy team concludes that the nuclear defense model needs to undergo constant refinements and new theoretical tests before it can be considered an official security protocol for our planet.
