RB Leipzig signs Orjan Nyland, goalkeeper who eliminated Brazil in the 2026 World Cup

Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland returns to RB Leipzig after shining in the 2026 World Cup for Norway. The 35-year-old athlete made his signing with the German team official on August 4, 2026, free of transfer costs, after ending his contract with Sevilla. He signed a new agreement that extends until June 2028.

Nyland played a central role in Norway’s historic 2-1 victory against the Brazilian team in the round of 16 of the World Cup. During the match, the goalkeeper saved a penalty taken by Bruno Guimarães and made crucial saves. The Norwegian journey in the tournament ended in the quarter-finals, after a defeat to England in extra time.

Leipzig’s goalkeeping coach, Frederik Gossling, who had previously worked with Nyland on the team, praised the athlete’s performance in the World Cup. In a statement to FIFA, Gossling said that the penalty save was one of the highlights of a performance that demonstrated intelligence and great confidence on the part of the goalkeeper throughout the game.

Nyland’s arrival represents his return to Leipzig, three years after his first spell at the club. In the 2022/2023 season, he participated in three official games and was part of the team that lifted the German Cup trophy, before his move to Sevilla.

Without a contract after leaving the Spanish club, the goalkeeper waited for the end of the World Cup to decide his next destination. The newly signed contract with the German team offers him the chance for a second phase in the team, this time with a high status, boosted by his outstanding performance in the World Cup for the Norwegian team.

Nyland, who started his career at Hødd in Norway, also had spells at Molde, Ingolstadt, Aston Villa, Norwich, Bournemouth, Reading and Sevilla. Now, he returns to German football to fill the position previously occupied by Péter Gulácsi, who left Leipzig.
