Tennis player Carlos Alcaraz, who currently occupies second place in the ATP rankings, had to postpone his return to competition. After not competing in tournaments since April 15, the Spaniard was confirmed for the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati, in the United States, but announced his withdrawal on August 4, 2026, according to a statement from the event.

The championship in the United States begins on August 7, and the organizers were counting on the 23-year-old athlete to participate. Alcaraz would defend the 2025 title, when he beat Jannik Sinner, the current leader of the world rankings. The tournament organization commented on the player’s decision on social media.

In a post, the Cincinnati Masters 1000 organization published the following message: “Wishing our 2025 champion all the best in his recovery process. I can’t wait to welcome him back next year!”

Bob Moran, director of the event, also spoke about the absence of the former leader of the global ranking. He has a record of 22 wins and three losses this season, during which time he won the Australian Open and ATP 500 titles in Doha.

Moran stated that “We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to competing in tournaments as soon as possible.”

The injury to his right wrist is the reason for the player’s absence. The last championship Alcaraz participated in was the ATP 500 in Barcelona, in April. After winning the second round, he withdrew from the round of 16 against Czech Tomas Machac to focus on his treatment. Experts indicate that inflammation in the thumb tendons, a common problem, may require up to six months for complete recovery.

In July, the tennis player published records of on-court training on his digital platforms. At the same time, information released internationally pointed to an increase in the intensity of their preparation, aiming for a return to competition in August.

With his withdrawal from the tournament in Cincinnati, uncertainty is growing about Alcaraz’s participation in the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, which will be held between August 23 and September 13.
