Google improves Chrome with updates that require restarting the browser
Google is developing new technology for the Chrome browser, allowing updates to be applied without users having to restart the program. In a released communication, the company detailed its plan to resolve security flaws in the age of artificial intelligence, seeking to reduce disruptions through “dynamic patching”, which will make a complete browser restart unnecessary.
The company reported that artificial intelligence-based security tools were crucial in identifying and fixing numerous vulnerabilities. Chrome versions 149 and 150, for example, implemented 1,072 fixes, a number greater than the combined patch total of the previous 23 major editions. This efficiency is one of the reasons that led Chrome to adopt a biweekly release schedule starting in September, with intermediate security updates. Additionally, Google is studying the possibility of two weekly security updates to confront “rapid AI-driven attacks.”

To ensure that these renewals happen more efficiently, Google seeks to “shift the burden” of responsibility to the user. This is because users are vulnerable to “N-day attacks”, a threat where hackers take advantage of recently fixed flaws, but which have not yet been installed on users’ devices, creating a security risk and the need for systems that update quickly.

In addition to developing dynamic patching, the technology giant also seeks to identify “appropriate moments to automatically restart”, thus ensuring a “flawless session restoration”. A version of this functionality has already been implemented in Chrome 150 for macOS, taking advantage of an operating system feature that allows applications to remain active in the background, even after closing all of their windows.
