Take-Two explains GTA 6’s decision not to offer early access before launch
During Take-Two Interactive’s recent quarterly earnings call, the company revealed details about Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6), including its stance on the lack of early access. CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked by investors both about the limited offering of special editions of the game – with standard versions for US$80 and definitive versions for US$100 in pre-sale – and the decision not to include early access, a common benefit in 2K sports titles, such as NBA, WWE and PGA Tour, which belong to the same corporation.
Zelnick clarified that defining sales values is Rockstar Games’ prerogative. He noted that despite the possibility of implementing higher prices for additional features such as paid early access, the team chose to prioritize delivering a high-value product to players. “Considering the expectations surrounding this title, I think we could have made several other pricing choices,” said the CEO. “But, as I said before, our focus is to deliver much more value than the price we charge.”

Zelnick detailed that the two available editions of Grand Theft Auto VI already represent a significant cost-benefit for the company. Despite the significant volume of pre-sales, he recalled that these purchases can be canceled before the game’s arrival, scheduled for November 19th. This scenario leads Take-Two Interactive to an optimistic but cautious stance, while projecting that the new title will contribute to a 20% increase in revenue for the current fiscal year.

The practice of early access has become considerably popular in the gaming industry in recent years. In addition to other publishers, Microsoft, for example, widely uses this strategy to motivate consumers to purchase premium editions, which naturally have a higher cost. Titles such as Forza Horizon 6 have already provided prior access at their launch and Gears of War: E-Day will also offer this benefit to buyers of their special versions.
The official launch of Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19th, with availability for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Netflix subscribers will have the opportunity to see an extended preview of the game starting August 27th.
