The technology giant Alphabet, the conglomerate responsible for Google’s operations, confirmed on August 5, 2026 a profound restructuring at the top of its main technological development arm.
The most impactful move involves Demis Hassabis, executive director of Google DeepMind, who will step down from day-to-day management of the department in charge of designing the Gemini family of language models.
From now on, the executive will act as president of the division and inaugurate the position of chief scientist for the entire Alphabet. The corporate maneuver highlights big tech’s urgency in achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) — theoretical systems capable of equaling or surpassing human cognitive capacity in any task —, freeing its greatest specialist to focus exclusively on advanced research. At the same time, he maintains leadership of Isomorphic Labs, a subsidiary dedicated to pharmaceutical innovation.
The researcher’s career in the field began in 2010, when he helped found the original startup alongside Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman, current head of Microsoft AI. Four years later, Google shelled out hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire the promising British company.
To fill the administrative gap, the corporation promoted Koray Kavukcuoglu. The professional, who served as technology director, was elevated to the position of senior vice president and will now coordinate the entire operational routine of the research team.
In an official statement addressed to employees, the new chief scientist justified the transition by stating that he dedicated his career to the pursuit of IAG and realizes that this historic milestone is getting closer. The specialist highlighted that he needed to go over the bureaucratic tasks to guarantee the necessary time and space to guide humanity’s next technological leaps in a safe way.
Market pressure and race against rivals drive internal changes
The musical chairs occur at a critical moment, marked by doubts from investors about the search giant’s agility in facing the rapid advances of major competitors, especially the creator of ChatGPT, OpenAI, and the startup Anthropic.
While the company’s cloud services segment is reporting robust business results, operating expenses are escalating at an alarming rate.
During the second quarter, the cloud sector’s financial statement revealed significant data about the company’s momentum:
- The segment’s revenue jumped 82% in the annual comparison, reaching the US$ 24.8 billion mark.
- Alphabet’s capital investment projection has soared to the range of $195 billion to $205 billion this year.
- The main focus of this astronomical injection of resources is the purchase of heavy infrastructure to support machine learning goals.
Another factor that weighed on the internal scenario was the delay in the launch of Gemini 3.5 Pro, the next generation of the brand’s intelligence engine, initially scheduled for June. Behind-the-scenes information indicates that the system failed internal quality tests, generating frustration and a drop in productivity among the engineers involved in the project.
Officially, the board argues that the new hierarchy serves precisely to unlock development bottlenecks, ensuring that the brightest mind in the house has carte blanche to explore the limits of computing without worrying about management spreadsheets.
The global executive director, Sundar Pichai, published a note highlighting that the corporation has the best processing infrastructure and the largest user base on the planet. The top leader reinforced the need to give projects a more aggressive pace to ensure that the company is the main architect of the future of computational science and of IAG itself.
Veteran leaves company to found non-profit organization
The redesign of the corporate organizational chart also revealed the loss of one of the most respected names in the global technology industry.
After 27 years of exclusive dedication to Google, Jeff Dean decided to leave his position as chief scientist at Google DeepMind. The veteran is taking with him a group of trusted collaborators to launch Discovery Loop, an entity focused on innovation that will not seek commercial profits.
In order not to completely lose its relationship with the researcher, the search giant confirmed that it will provide the entire server infrastructure and act as the main financier of the new venture.
In his farewell text, the engineer explained that the mission of his new foundation will be to create tools capable of automating complex engineering and machine learning processes, aiming to shorten the time needed for major scientific discoveries.
Until the closing of this publication, the corporation’s press office had not issued additional comments on the immediate impacts of this stampede.
