A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook eastern Indonesia on the morning of August 15, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for the region. The tremor generated concern in several coastal communities and was quickly accompanied by aftershocks, according to information from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG).

Details about the earthquake epicenter and tsunami warning

The USGS reported that the epicenter of the tremor was recorded on the north coast of Flores Island, located approximately 68 kilometers northwest of the city of Ende. The depth of the seismic event was estimated at 10 kilometers.

The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) quickly issued a warning, indicating that the earthquake had the potential to generate a tsunami. This alert raises the level of concern in an area historically vulnerable to natural disasters.

The aftershock sequence and location in the Ring of Fire

Shortly after the main earthquake, the region was hit by two more significant aftershocks, with magnitudes of 5.6 and 5.9, increasing seismic instability and the risk to local structures.

Indonesia is located in one of the most seismically active regions on the planet, known as the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. This area is characterized by the meeting of several tectonic plates, which results in frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, making the country especially susceptible to events like the one that occurred.

Active alert and increased attention from authorities

With the tsunami warning still in effect, people in coastal areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities. Although details about possible damage or casualties have not yet been released, rapid response is crucial to minimize risks.

The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency monitors seismic activity and ocean conditions. The focus is on providing up-to-date information and ensuring the safety of residents given the persistent risk of aftershocks and the possibility of larger events.
