Nintendo Switch 2 game sales exceed expectations amid console decline
The Nintendo Switch 2 recorded a 34.4% drop in hardware sales when compared to the previous quarter, according to data released on August 6, 2026. Despite the one-off decrease, Nintendo’s hybrid system maintains its position as the console with the fastest sales in history, having shipped more than 23.68 million units globally.
The company anticipates a reduction in sales for the next quarter, mainly due to the price adjustment of the Nintendo Switch 2, which will go from US$450 to US$500 in the United States from September 1st. Even with the expectation of a slowdown, Nintendo maintains its projection of 16.5 million console units sold for the 2027 fiscal year.

In an earnings release, Nintendo highlighted that, even with the reduction in hardware volume, “many consumers continued to adopt the system, encouraged by the launch of new titles and other factors.” The company’s revenue surpassed projections, driven by strong game sales. Among the highlights, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream sold 7.96 million units in the first three months, accompanied by releases such as Pokémon Pokopia, Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.

In the adaptations sector, success is also notable. Nintendo reported that Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie has grossed $1 billion at the global box office since its April 1 release. This film became the second biggest video game adaptation for the big screen of all time, behind only the famous plumber’s first feature film.
Despite the good performance of the software, Nintendo foresees future challenges, such as new tariffs and memory costs. The company indicated an impact of approximately 100 billion yen (equivalent to US$633 million) on sales costs, mainly attributed to increased prices of memory components and tariff measures.
There are indications that Nintendo may be planning to launch a new version of the Switch 2, which would include a higher quality LCD screen, according to information circulating in the market.
