According to the Colombian Geological Survey (SGC), the country records an average of 2,500 small tremors per month. Additionally, Colombia is home to an area known as the “seismic nest” in Santander, a location where earthquakes occur with a remarkably high frequency. Widespread destruction and disruptions in Colombian cities
The epicenter of the 7.4 magnitude tremor was identified in the municipality of San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, in the Colombian Pacific region. However, the earthquake and its aftershocks intensely affected other areas, including the departments of Caldas, Quindío, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca. The Colombian Geological Survey recorded 256 aftershocks until August 14, 17 of which had a magnitude greater than 3.0, which generated a continuous state of alert among the population.

In the most impacted cities, the damage was extensive. In Cali, at least 20 structures were completely destroyed, with reports of people trapped under the rubble, generating scenes of despair and huge rescue efforts. The capital of Chocó, Quibdó, witnessed the collapse of a building, and the department’s governor, Nubia Carolina Córdoba, confirmed injuries and serious damage to local buildings. The destruction of housing and essential infrastructure, such as roads and aqueducts, not only prevents a return to normality, but also hampers access to humanitarian aid and basic services. Repercussions in neighboring countries and the government response
The powerful seismic shock was not limited to Colombian territory. The tremor was felt in neighboring countries such as Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela, generating concern across the region and prompting local authorities to issue warnings. As one of the direct consequences of the catastrophe, the Colombian football championship had its remaining fourth round matches postponed, out of respect for the victims and to facilitate rescue and assistance operations that have become a national priority.
The Colombian government has acted to coordinate the response to the emergency. Vice President José Manuel Restrepo planned to visit the most affected municipalities in the north of Valle del Cauca and Risaralda to assess the damage and direct necessary aid to the devastated communities, demonstrating the authorities’ commitment.
