Midfielder Paul Pogba has no longer been part of the Monaco squad since August 19, 2026. The club decided to terminate the athlete’s contract, which was scheduled to end only the following year.
In an official statement, the Principality team, led by Brazilian coach Filipe Luís, explained that the 33-year-old player’s departure was motivated by a series of injuries that prevented him from playing, playing just six games.
“Monaco and Paul Pogba jointly concluded that the objectives initially set were only partially achieved”, highlighted the statement.
With the end of the contract, which originally ran until mid-2027, Pogba becomes a free agent on the market, able to negotiate with other teams.
The former member of the French national team arrived at the Monegasque club last year, shortly after serving a suspension for doping.
The star’s punishment took place in 2024, for the use of DHEA, a substance known for raising testosterone levels. After an appeal filed with the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport), the suspension was reduced to 18 months.
Before signing with the Ligue 1 team, Pogba had not played official matches since 2023, when he played for Juventus. In the 2025/26 season, he managed to participate in just six matches for Monaco.
“I would like to thank the president and the board, my teammates, all the staff members and the fans who believed in me,” said the midfielder about his departure.
“Representing this club was an incredible experience. Monaco is an incredible club, and although I wasn’t able to play as much as I would have liked, I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to wear these colors,” added Pogba.
The CEO of the Monegasque club, Brazilian Thiago Scuro, also spoke, thanking the midfielder for his stay.
“On behalf of the club, I would just like to say ‘thank you’ to Paul. We are very happy for the journey we have had together. When he joined us, we explained that it would be a great challenge, full of audacity and ambition. Unfortunately, it did not work out as we had hoped, but that should not diminish the enthusiasm with which he approached his return to football”, argued Scuro.
“The fact that he managed to return to the pitch and to professional football during this period should also not be diminished. And what he brought to the locker room, especially with the younger athletes, with whom he always shared his vast experience in the sport with very valuable advice, was something precious”, said the executive.
“His attitude towards us was exemplary from start to finish, demonstrating his qualities and the incredible champion that he is. We wish Paul all the best in the future”, concluded Thiago Scuro.
