A new documentary, entitled “A Beautiful Obsession”, released by Amazon Prime on August 20, 2026, revealed moments of high tension involving coach Pep Guardiola and full-back Kyle Walker during the Spaniard’s time at Manchester City. The production details behind the scenes of a turbulent period for the English club, including a heated argument and the coach’s emotional tears when addressing his contract renewal.

The remarkable scene occurred shortly after a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool. At the time, Kyle Walker, who was City’s captain, expressed his displeasure with Guardiola, stating that the coach frequently mentioned his name in squad meetings, making him feel unfairly responsible. The player also questioned the captain’s belt, chosen by his own colleagues, as he had the impression that Guardiola did not see him as a leader.

In response, the coach argued that the issue was being taken personally by the athlete. Then, with his voice choked with emotion, Guardiola explained to the players the reason for extending his relationship with the club in the midst of the crisis. He assured that his stay at Manchester City was not for financial reasons or just to keep his position, but rather because of his deep desire to fight alongside the group and overcome adversity. “If I’m a problem, you need to tell me. I’m not going to stay here for the money or simply for the sake of continuing. I renewed my contract because I want to be with you. I want to fight. I don’t want you to feel like I’m leaving or running away,” Guardiola declared.

During that difficult period, Manchester City went through a worrying run of 13 matches, recording just one win and nine defeats. The coach’s wear and tear was visible, even on the sidelines of the field, as in the 3-3 draw with Feyenoord, in the Champions League, when the team allowed a three-goal lead to slip away.

Still in the documentary, the tension was repeated after another defeat, this time 2-0 against Bayer Leverkusen, also in the Champions League. On that occasion, Guardiola had made ten changes to the starting line-up, a decision that generated internal criticism within the club itself and increased pressure on the commander.

The documentary series also explores the personal challenges faced by the coach outside of football. In a section of intense outburst, Guardiola addresses his divorce, revealing that his personal life was going through a complicated phase while he dedicated all his efforts to finding solutions to the team’s crisis. “This lack of courage, passion, love and desire to win and do better is unacceptable. I work for you. I leave my life, my divorce and my family are far away, and everything for you. And what do you give me in return?”, he asked.

Pep Guardiola ended his career at Manchester City with a legacy of 20 titles won over ten seasons. “A Beautiful Obsession” consists of four episodes and follows the coach’s final two years at the club, also including details about the departure of Kevin De Bruyne, one of the most important players of the Guardiola era, and the process of reformulating the squad.
