The countdown to a unique celestial phenomenon is underway. Skywatchers eagerly await the most intense partial lunar eclipse to be visible until December 2028.

The partial and deep lunar eclipse, which will occur between August 27 and 28, 2026, is a major astronomical event. In the coming days, the latest information and recommendations for your observation will be released.

While it’s not a total lunar eclipse, it comes pretty close. At its maximum point, about 96.2% of the lunar surface will be immersed in the umbra, the Earth’s central shadow. This large portion of the Moon may appear reddish, while a narrow band will remain illuminated.

This will be the most significant partial lunar eclipse to be observed from any location on the planet until December 31, 2028. The rarity of the event makes it unmissable, justifying taking the time to appreciate it.

Understanding the Phases of a Partial Lunar Eclipse

During a lunar eclipse, the full Moon appears in a dark sky, and its right portion acquires a reddish glow as it passes through the Earth’s shadow.

A partial lunar eclipse unfolds in five distinct stages, which are seen simultaneously by all observers on the night side of Earth. This occurs when our planet is positioned between the Sun and the natural satellite during the full moon phase.

The event begins with the subtle darkening of the Moon by the penumbra, the Earth’s outer shadow. Subsequently, the umbra, the inner shadow, begins to reveal the curved silhouette of our planet as it advances across the lunar disk.

The essential details for observing the approaching eclipse

With the partial deep lunar eclipse approaching in a few days, it is the ideal time to organize how it will be possible to follow the “almost blood moon”.

At the phenomenon’s peak, an impressive 96.2% of the lunar surface will be under the umbra, Earth’s darkest central shadow. Although the Moon will not be completely eclipsed — therefore avoiding the classification of “Blood Moon” —, a large part of it is expected to take on a color that varies between red and orange, with only a thin edge remaining visibly bright.
