Nintendo announced the development of Metroid Ravenous on September 9, 2026, during an official Nintendo Direct presentation. The upcoming 2D adventure follows the events of Metroid Dread and launches worldwide on January 28, 2027.
Trailer depicts an injured heroine on an alien moon
The debut footage reveals bounty hunter Samus stranded on an unknown desert moon after an ambush. Hostile forces severely damage her armor and leave her isolated beneath the surface. Samus vows to survive and claw her way back across the sands.
“I was attacked by unknown assailants and sustained grave injuries,” Samus says during the trailer, adding: “I don’t know where I am. Getting back to the surface won’t be easy. My chances of getting off this moon are slim at best. Still – I will survive. And I will make it home. Even if I have to feed on my enemies to do so. It’s eat or be eaten.”
Samus confronts five cloaked adversaries in the desert
Visual sequences show Samus facing off against five mysterious figures dressed in cloaks and wide-brimmed hats that obscure their faces. She falls into deep desert terrain before attempting to navigate back toward open ground.
New abilities introduce life siphoning and wall phasing
Gameplay reveals an extensive array of traversal mechanics that enable Samus to dash through solid barriers, run directly across bodies of water, and siphon the vital energy from fallen adversaries until their physical bodies dissolve into dust.
- A phase dash that warps Samus through solid walls
- Specialized movement allowing her to run across water
- The returning parry maneuver established in Metroid Dread
- An energy siphoning ability that extracts life force from opponents
Combat mechanics bring back defensive parrying systems
Demonstrations show Samus executing the defensive parry against aggressive creatures before turning their own energy against them. She absorbs enemy life. The absorbed target quickly dissipates into nothingness after losing its vital life force.
The production marks the latest 2D installment in the series following the releases of Metroid Dread and Metroid Prime 4. Global distribution begins on January 28, 2027.
