A £25 million asking price — equivalent to approximately $33.5 million or R$ 174 million — marks the entry of Ormeley Lodge into the prime international property market. Located in the Richmond district of southwest London, the historic residence became widely known as a regular weekend retreat for Diana, Princess of Wales, and served for half a century as the family seat of the Goldsmith dynasty.

Jointly marketed in the United Kingdom by real estate agencies Knight Frank and UK Sotheby’s International Realty — represented in Brazil by Bossa Nova Sotheby’s International Realty — the manor spent five decades under the ownership of British socialite and author Lady Annabel Goldsmith and her second husband, financier and politician Sir James Goldsmith. The family decided to list the residence following the death of the matriarch at age 91. “Ormeley has been our treasured home for our whole lives. But it’s time now to pass it on to another lucky family,” said financier and environmentalist Ben Goldsmith, the couple’s youngest son.

Interior layout, Colefax & Fowler design, and acreage in Richmond

Set on the edge of Ham Common and bordering Richmond Park, the three-story brick manor blends Queen Anne and early Georgian architecture with English Baroque and Classical detailing. Decorated during the 1980s by the British interior design firm Colefax & Fowler, the residence preserves original period elements such as ornate cornicing, wooden paneling, period wallpaper, sculpted fireplaces, and oversized sash windows, alongside a front doorway framed by Corinthian pilasters and a carved frieze. On the ground floor, the layout encompasses a main entrance hall with a principal staircase, reception and drawing rooms, a library, a formal dining room, a kitchen with pantry and larder, a breakfast room, service quarters, a wine cellar, and storage areas, while the upper levels house the primary suite with a private study, a second bedroom suite with a dressing room, additional bedrooms, a self-contained staff flat with its own sitting room, a mews house, and guest cottages.

High brick walls and wrought-iron gates enclose the grounds, which combine leisure amenities with cultivated gardens designed by landscape architects Arabella Lennox-Boyd — a six-time Chelsea Flower Show gold medalist — and Mary Keen. “From the moment my mother arrived at Ormeley Lodge in 1976, the magic for her was in its location,” Ben Goldsmith stated, noting that the property is surrounded on three sides by Ham Common and the Ham Common Woods Nature Reserve.

Technical specifications and structural measurements from the listing agencies outline the full scale of the southwest London compound:

Royal encounters and high-society gatherings hosted by the Goldsmith family

Throughout the 1990s, Princess Diana maintained a close friendship with Lady Annabel Goldsmith and attended Sunday lunches at the house on roughly two out of every three weekends, frequently arriving with a young Prince William and Prince Harry so her sons could use the heated pool and tennis court. Earlier, in 1989, the residence became the backdrop for a pivotal moment in modern British royal history when Diana personally confronted Camilla Parker-Bowles — now Queen Camilla, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom — regarding her extramarital relationship with the then-Prince Charles during a 40th birthday party hosted at the manor for Camilla’s sister, Annabel Elliot.

Over her 50-year tenure at the address, Lady Annabel Goldsmith — whose first husband, entrepreneur Mark Birley, opened the private Mayfair members’ club Annabel’s in 1963 and named it in her honor — turned the estate into a gathering point for politicians, aristocrats, and entertainment figures. The guest list included British actor Hugh Grant, who dated her daughter Jemima Goldsmith between 2004 and 2007, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, who was previously married to Jemima, broadcaster Sir David Frost, and Princess Alexandra of Kent. Before the Goldsmith family purchased the house from racehorse breeder Lord Howard de Walden, previous residents and owners included builder Thomas Hammond, eighteenth-century statesmen Horatio Walpole and William Pitt the Elder, Member of Parliament Sir John Sinclair, and David Fane, who served as Master of the Horse (a ceremonial sovereign court position) to Queen Elizabeth II.

Grade II* heritage protection rules and timeline of the property

Constructed during the transition between the late Stuart period (1603 to 1714) and the early Georgian era, Ormeley Lodge holds a Grade II* designation on the United Kingdom’s National Heritage List for England — a legal classification reserved for particularly significant historic buildings — and sits within the Ham Common conservation area, subjecting any structural alterations to strict planning permission. Marcello Romero, founder and chief executive officer of Bossa Nova Sotheby’s International Realty, noted that heritage properties in Europe routinely carry legal and municipal conditions governing renovations. “In most cases, these types of properties allow updates. However, they may carry contractual requirements to preserve certain features, or even local legislation,” the executive explained.

Romero pointed to previous high-value European transactions to illustrate how municipal preservation statutes regulate historic estates. “As an example, we sold a castle in France that had a very specific restriction regarding the facade, where any alterations were prohibited. Those were matters of municipal management and legislation in that case,” he said, while Paddy Dring, global head of prime sales at Knight Frank, described the Richmond manor as “part of British cultural heritage”.

Archival records and real estate filings trace the ownership and market trajectory of the estate across three centuries:

  • Around 1715: Thomas Hammond, son of a landowner from Teddington, builds the house on the site of a former cottage.
  • 1763 to 1767: Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Charles Townshend and his wife Caroline reside at the property before moving to neighboring Sudbrook Lodge.
  • January 10, 1950: British heritage authorities officially designate the house, along with its wrought-iron gates and railings, as a Grade II*-listed building.
  • 1976: Lady Annabel Goldsmith and Sir James Goldsmith acquire the estate after Lady Annabel writes a letter to owner Lord Howard de Walden inquiring whether he would sell.
  • October 18, 2025: Lady Annabel Goldsmith dies at the age of 91, prompting her six children to prepare the property for sale.
  • July 3, 2026: Ormeley Lodge officially enters the British prime real estate market with a £25 million asking price.
  • August 12, 2026: The listing is formally presented to prospective buyers in the Brazilian luxury market at a converted valuation of R$ 174 million.
  • Thursday (15): International property syndication expands coverage of the listing in the United States and global markets at the converted figure of $33.5 million.

Within the ultra-prime residential sector, properties tied to prominent historical figures are categorized by brokers as trophy assets due to their provenance. “This type of property generates more curiosity, a certain excitement. When properties belonging to famous individuals are put up for sale, they generate additional interest; it is a draw,” Marcello Romero stated. Alongside the Richmond manor, the Goldsmith family also placed Britannia Studios — a converted southwest London artist’s studio owned by film and television producer Jemima Goldsmith — on the market for $8.7 million, while in the United States, a Los Angeles estate formerly owned by actress Angelina Jolie was listed in the same luxury segment for $30 million (R$ 155 million).
