Activision and developer Infinity Ward opened early access to the DMZ extraction mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The release arrives ahead of the game’s global launch scheduled for Friday (23) and follows the Campaign Early Access period that began the previous week.
Exclusive to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the DMZ mode deploys players into an exclusion zone on the Hajin map, where Operators must gather resources, complete objectives, and extract while facing both artificial intelligence forces and rival human players. Rather than functioning purely as cosmetic skins, Operators act as individual characters that gain DMZ experience points (XP) and grow stronger as they survive deployments.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 release schedule, platforms and Hajin map specifications
The mode introduces a persistent tactical structure supported by a central command hub known as the Forward Operating Base (FOB), where players manage their roster and unlock specialized stations such as a 3D Printer, Gunsmith, Vendor, and Operator Station. Below are the technical details and launch specifications confirmed for the release:

Operator recruitment and MIA recovery rules in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
When starting in DMZ, players must assign an Operator to one of their two initial Active Duty slots, keeping that character bound to the slot until they choose to dismiss them for a new recruit. Building a roster with varied roles allows players to select specialized configurations tailored to specific raid objectives. Every Active Duty Operator carries a Dog Tag that increases in quality as the character completes successful extractions and earns XP, progressing up to the maximum Onyx III tier. All Dog Tags collected from defeated opponents are recorded in the player’s Equipment profile, which tracks the tag tier, active bounties, and eliminated human Operators.
If an Operator is eliminated during a deployment in Hajin, enemy combatants can loot their Dog Tag, and the character receives a Missing in Action (MIA) status, preventing them from entering new raids until they are either dismissed or rescued. To recover an MIA Operator, the player must access the Active Duty station inside the Forward Operating Base (FOB) and pay a fee in DMZ Cash from their in-game Bank, with the recovery price scaling upward based on the number of Trait Points invested in that character. A rescued Operator retains all previously selected Traits but loses the gear carried during elimination, though players without gear can claim a Free Loadout at the start of any raid.

The 66 Traits and three specialization trees in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
Completing a successful extraction and upgrading a Dog Tag rewards the Operator with Trait Points, which can be banked or spent immediately at the Operator Station menu across three distinct Trait Trees: Combatant, Scout, and Survivor. While there is a pool of 66 unlockable Traits in total — most of which remain hidden and randomized as characters progress — each individual Operator can hold a maximum of 18 Trait Points at a time. Spending the first point unlocks the initial Trait of a chosen tree, and once a selection is locked in, alternative branches on that same node become unavailable, though repeated deployments in Hajin allow a single Operator to branch out into multiple trees.

- Combatant Tree (focused on direct engagements and survival): Adrenaline Rush resets Tactical Sprint after an elimination; Equipment Pro slowly recharges equipped Lethal and Tactical gear; Battle Hardened reduces explosive damage and enemy Tactical effects; Viper Sense warns when enemy players are nearby; Quick Regeneration shortens the delay before health regeneration after eliminating a hostile combatant or enemy Operator; Playing Dead allows self-revival once per match after dying.
- Scout Tree (focused on resource gathering, FOB printer ingredients, and detection): Rare AI Drops grants AI enemies a small chance to drop Rare items; Enemy Looter allows enemies to occasionally drop an Uncommon printer ingredient with a small chance of being Rare; Container Looter offers a chance to find an extra item inside containers; Thermal Coating conceals the Operator from UAVs; UAV Upgrade turns a standard UAV into a longer-lasting Advanced UAV; Surveillance prevents UAV Towers from expiring.

Operator Prestige requirements and evolution of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
Once an Active Duty Operator reaches the cap of 18 Trait Points at the Onyx III Dog Tag tier, accumulates the required amount of DMZ Cash, and equips a specific set of rare gear, players can trigger the DMZ Operator Prestige. Activating Prestige resets all 18 Trait Points and wipes every item stored inside the Operator’s Backpack, making it necessary to remove valuable loot beforehand. In exchange, the character unlocks a randomly assigned Permanent Prestige Trait that stays bound to that specific Operator even if they are dismissed, moved to another Active Duty slot, or given a different Operator Skin. Players can repeat the process to earn additional Prestige levels, with each subsequent tier demanding higher amounts of DMZ Cash and more valuable equipment. This Operator Prestige operates independently from the standard player level progression.
The extraction mode originally debuted as a Beta in 2022 within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and was rebuilt from the ground up by Infinity Ward for the 2026 release to incorporate persistent progression at the Forward Operating Base, Story Missions, and Dynamic Operations. When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches globally on Friday (23), the full package will feature three core modes: the DMZ extraction mode, a traditional Multiplayer mode launching with 12 6v6 maps on day one, and a single-player Campaign set across Korea, New York, Paris, Mumbai, and the Russian border.
