McLaren, after taking the lead in the Constructors’ Championship, is in a prime position to claim the world title, breaking a 16-year trophy drought. With six races remaining in the 2024 Formula 1 season, the British team holds an advantage and boasts the best equipment on the grid, making the championship increasingly likely.

McLaren’s dominance in 2024

McLaren’s leadership came later than expected. Since the Miami Grand Prix, when the team introduced a major upgrade, they have dominated the grid with the best car of the season. Red Bull, while still having Max Verstappen as an exceptional driver, couldn’t keep pace, mainly due to Sergio Pérez’s inconsistent performance.

The gap between Red Bull’s drivers has been a critical issue for the team. Christian Horner and Helmut Marko have expressed concerns about the lack of competitive support for Verstappen, especially at such a decisive moment in the championship. Meanwhile, McLaren has seized the opportunity to cement its lead.

Red Bull’s factor: a growing challenge

Although McLaren has pulled ahead, Red Bull still holds second place and retains hopes of turning things around. They are 41 points behind, leaving the team in the race, especially with Verstappen maintaining a strong individual performance. However, Red Bull hasn’t won since the Spanish Grand Prix, going eight races without a victory.

Moreover, Red Bull has been dealing with an internal crisis since the start of the season, with updates turning the RB20 into a difficult car to manage. This, combined with Pérez’s decline, has put the team in a tough spot. The focus for the Austrians might shift to defending second place as Ferrari looms dangerously close.

Ferrari back in the game

Ferrari, which started the season with fluctuations, seems to have found stability. In the last five races, the Italians secured four podiums, indicating a significant recovery. The car’s performance has improved, becoming more stable and competitive, putting Ferrari in a direct battle with Red Bull for second place in the Constructors’ Championship.

The gap between the two teams is just 34 points, and Ferrari appears to have more momentum in this crucial phase of the season. With McLaren pulling further ahead, Red Bull may end up focusing on maintaining their second position rather than fighting for the title.

Mercedes and Aston Martin: fading forces

While Ferrari recovers, Mercedes seems to be going in the opposite direction. The team, which dominated Formula 1 for nearly a decade, faces a difficult 2024 season. Since the summer break, the silver arrows have struggled to remain competitive, especially compared to their main rivals.

The gap between Mercedes and Ferrari in the Constructors’ Championship is a staggering 112 points, making it almost impossible for them to claim third place. The team’s focus now appears to be holding onto fourth position and preparing for Lewis Hamilton’s farewell, as the seven-time champion is expected to leave F1 at the end of the season.

Aston Martin, meanwhile, has also underperformed compared to early expectations. Despite starting the year as a potential threat to the top teams, they have fallen behind and now sit comfortably in fifth place, out of contention for anything higher but also safe from those below.

Tight battles in the midfield

Further down the grid, the fight between Haas and AlphaTauri for sixth place remains close. The American team, led by Nico Hülkenberg, has shown competitiveness, but AlphaTauri, with Liam Lawson now replacing Daniel Ricciardo, is also fighting hard for a strong finish. The final races of the season will be decisive in determining who comes out on top in this battle.

In the back of the pack, Williams is in a much-improved phase, especially with Franco Colapinto replacing Logan Sargeant. The British team has shown significant progress and is favored to finish ahead of Alpine, which has had a disastrous season. Alpine, once a solid midfield team, now struggles in 2024 and is fighting not to finish last, a position currently held by Sauber.

The final stretch of the season and McLaren’s dream

With six races to go, Formula 1 is heading for an exciting conclusion. McLaren has the opportunity to end a 16-year title drought and claim its first Constructors’ Championship since 1998. To do so, the team must maintain consistency and avoid mistakes in the final races. The title would be a significant milestone for one of Formula 1’s most iconic teams, ending a long period of frustration for the British squad.

The next race will take place at the United States Grand Prix, from October 18 to 20, at the Austin circuit, where McLaren hopes to take another step toward the long-awaited title.
