The Pitt-Jolie family rift
The absence of Brad Pitt at Knox’s birthday event reflects the deep divide in the Pitt-Jolie family since their 2016 separation. The divorce, finalized in December 2024 after eight years, stemmed from a 2016 incident on a private flight, where Jolie alleged Pitt was verbally and physically abusive toward her and their children. Though Pitt was never convicted, the incident led to his estrangement from Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox, and Vivienne. The ongoing legal battle over Chateau Miraval, their co-owned vineyard, continues to strain relations, with Pitt demanding Jolie’s private messages related to the business.
Knox and Vivienne, the youngest at 17, are seen as the most likely to reconcile with Pitt. Knox’s retention of the Pitt surname, unlike Shiloh and Zahara, who dropped it, suggests a potential openness. Vivienne, who worked with Jolie on The Outsiders on Broadway, aligns closely with her mother, recently removing “Pitt” from her name. Pitt has expressed regret and a desire to rebuild ties, but his absence at key moments like Knox’s birthday draws criticism from Jolie’s supporters.
The family’s public saga, amplified by media coverage, keeps fans engaged. Jolie’s role as a devoted mother contrasts with Pitt’s limited presence, shaping public perceptions of their dynamic. The vineyard dispute, ongoing since 2021, remains a significant hurdle to any reconciliation.

Background of the Pitt-Jolie saga
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who met on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004, built a family of six children through adoption (Maddox, Pax, Zahara) and biological births (Shiloh, Knox, Vivienne). Their 2016 divorce, triggered by allegations of Pitt’s abusive behavior, shifted family dynamics significantly. The custody battle, lasting until 2024, left Pitt with limited contact, particularly with the older children. The Chateau Miraval dispute, involving a multimillion-dollar vineyard, remains unresolved, with Pitt accusing Jolie of breaching agreements and Jolie claiming he seeks financial control.
Knox and Vivienne, born in 2008, are the youngest and least public of the siblings. Knox’s choice to keep the Pitt surname contrasts with Shiloh’s legal name change at 18 and Zahara’s informal dropping of the surname. The family’s story, a mix of Hollywood glamour and personal turmoil, continues to captivate global audiences.
- Family timeline:
- Met in 2004, separated in 2016 after flight incident.
- Divorce finalized in December 2024 after eight years.
- Vineyard dispute ongoing since 2021.
- Knox and Vivienne seen as key to Pitt’s reconciliation hopes.
Potential for reconciliation
Pitt’s absence at Knox’s birthday does not rule out future reconciliation. Filming commitments in London for F1, a high-profile project, kept him away, but sources close to the actor suggest he plans to reach out to Knox and Vivienne soon. Knox’s retention of the Pitt surname is seen as a positive sign, though Vivienne’s alignment with Jolie suggests a tougher path. The resolution of the vineyard dispute could ease tensions, but public sentiment leans toward Jolie due to her consistent presence.
The older siblings—Maddox, Pax, and Zahara—remain distant, with Pax publicly criticizing Pitt in 2020. Shiloh’s name change in 2024 further highlighted the divide. Knox, however, appears more neutral, and his Muay Thai focus may keep him out of the public feud. Pitt’s efforts to reconnect will likely depend on private gestures rather than public appearances.
- Reconciliation prospects:
- Pitt plans to reach out to Knox and Vivienne post-filming.
- Knox’s surname retention seen as a hopeful sign.
- Older siblings remain distant from Pitt.
- Vineyard dispute resolution may aid reconciliation.
