Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the United States Grand Prix on October 19, 2025, at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, also securing the sprint race victory on Saturday. The flawless weekend earned him 33 points, slashing the gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri of McLaren from 63 to 40 points. This resurgence puts the four-time champion back in contention for a fifth consecutive title, with five races left in the season.

Verstappen led from pole, maintaining control throughout the race without challenge. Lando Norris, Piastri’s McLaren teammate, took second, while Piastri finished fifth, intensifying McLaren’s internal competition.

The final calendar includes Mexico, Brazil, Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi, with sprint races in São Paulo and Doha.

Red Bull’s technical leap fuels comeback

Red Bull introduced upgrades to the RB21 since July 2025, under new team principal Laurent Mekies. These enhancements improved reliability across diverse circuits, enabling Verstappen to win three of the last four races.

In Austin, the car excelled in high-speed corners, particularly in the final sector. Chief engineer Paul Monaghan noted better aerodynamic stability, addressing earlier season inconsistencies.

Verstappen’s pole-to-flag victory came with a nine-second lead over Norris. Precise tire management ensured his dominance throughout the race.

Verstappen’s recent surge

Since the Italian GP on September 7, Verstappen amassed 119 points in five races. This outpaces Piastri’s 62 and Norris’s 57 points in the same period, reversing an initial 104-point deficit.

His run includes wins in Italy and Azerbaijan, plus a podium in Singapore. Piastri’s early exit in Azerbaijan due to a crash aided Verstappen’s charge.

Verstappen has five wins this season, against Piastri’s seven. Norris, with four victories, struggles with consistency, worsened by a clash with Piastri in Austin’s sprint.

The Dutchman avoided incidents, securing poles in Austin and other key races.

Points at stake and title math

With 125 points available in the five remaining Grands Prix and 16 from two sprints, a maximum of 141 points is up for grabs. Verstappen, at 306, could reach 447 by winning all events.

Piastri, with 346, would need consistent second places in GPs and third in sprints to gain 104 points, reaching 450—a slim three-point edge over Verstappen.

Norris, at 332, trails Piastri by 14 and Verstappen by 26. A Verstappen win paired with a rival’s retirement, as seen in Azerbaijan, could cut Piastri’s lead below 30 points quickly.

  • GP win: 25 points
  • Second place: 18 points
  • Sprint win: 8 points

Verstappen needs an average of eight points per weekend over Piastri, achievable with Red Bull’s current pace.

Strategies for final races

McLaren faces internal pressure, with Piastri defending the lead and Norris aiming to overtake. The team avoids favoring one driver, but incidents like Austin’s sprint clash highlight tensions.

Verstappen adopts a race-by-race approach, avoiding title predictions. He noted post-race that the comeback surprised even Red Bull, yet his focus remains on maximizing results.

Circuits like Interlagos favor overtaking, aiding Verstappen in sprints. Red Bull plans setup tweaks for Mexico’s high altitude.

Tire strategy and aggression will be key, especially in Las Vegas’s variable nighttime conditions.

Remaining calendar and key factors

The Mexico GP follows on October 26, then Brazil on November 9 with a sprint. Las Vegas is on November 23, without a sprint.

Qatar, on November 29, includes a sprint, and Abu Dhabi closes on December 7. These mixed layouts will test Red Bull’s adaptability.

Weather in Brazil and fuel efficiency in Qatar’s desert could sway results. Verstappen emphasized clean starts, avoiding incidents like those in Austin.

The three-way fight boosts excitement, with McLaren leading the constructors’ championship by 48 points over Red Bull.

Historical F1 comebacks

In 2012, Vettel overcame a 40-point gap to Alonso in nine races. Hamilton mirrored this in 2014 against Rosberg.

In 1984, Lauda edged Prost by half a point with a late surge. These precedents show 40 points in five GPs is tough but possible with consistency.

Verstappen, with 67 career wins, boasts a 70% podium rate in 2025. Piastri, a title rookie, has poles in Monza and Hungary but costly recent errors.

Red Bull aims for second in constructors, while Ferrari pushes with Leclerc in fourth overall.
