João Fonseca will reach the 24th position in the ATP ranking in the next update, scheduled for Monday. The 19-year-old Rio de Janeiro tennis player will climb four positions after adding 50 points at the Paris Masters 1000, where he was eliminated in the second round. The confirmation came with the falls of opponents who could overtake him.

The Brazilian will accumulate 1,665 points and establish the best position of his career. He will become the third best Brazilian tennis player in the history of the men’s singles ranking. The mark equals that of Thomaz Koch, achieved in 1974.

  • Current provisional position: 24th
  • Points earned in Paris: 50
  • Confirmed climb: 4 positions

Fonseca will surpass the 25th place of Fernando Meligeni, recorded in 1999.

Climb in the ATP ranking

The young tennis player started the week in 28th place. Participation in Paris secured the points needed for the initial projection of 24th. Three competitors threatened the position: Valentin Vacherot, Daniel Altmaier, and Lorenzo Sonego. All were eliminated in earlier rounds than expected. Vacherot fell in the quarterfinals. Altmaier and Sonego exited in the round of 16.

Brazilian history in ATP

Gustavo Kuerten leads as world number 1 in 2000. Thomaz Bellucci reached the 21st position in July 2010. João Fonseca equals Thomaz Koch in the 24th placement. He surpasses Fernando Meligeni and other names on the national list. The mark positions the Rio player as the youngest among the current top 30 in the world.

Performance in Paris

Fonseca faced Karen Khachanov in the second round. The match ended 2 sets to 1 for the Russian. The Brazilian showed resistance in key moments. He earned the 50 points for advancing in the main draw. The elimination did not prevent the ranking climb. Direct opponents lost in sequence.

Season closure

A lower back pain prevents further competitions in 2025. Fonseca will not participate in the ATP 250 in Athens. The tennis player projected finishing among the top 40. The goal was exceeded with the current position. He will end the year between 24th and 30th places. The ATP Finals gathers only the top eight.

Scheduled exhibition

Fonseca will play an exhibition match on December 8. The opponent will be Carlos Alcaraz, ranking leader. The event takes place in Miami, United States. The lower back pain does not affect the confirmed participation. The Brazilian totals prize money of R$ 9.4 million in the season.

Internal projections

Initial goals included the top 40. The advance reflects performance throughout the year. Fonseca expressed satisfaction with the results. He plans evolution for 2026. The Rio tennis player consolidates presence in the main circuit at 19 years old.
