Roblox announced this Tuesday (18) that age verification is mandatory to use chat on the platform. Users will have to present an official document with a photo or perform facial verification using artificial intelligence. The measure aims to avoid direct contact between children and unknown adults.

The change comes after a series of lawsuits against the United States that accuse the company of facilitating sexual predators’ access to minors. The platform, with more than 150 million monthly active users, a third of them under 13 years old, already had filters, but expanded the restrictions.

Implementation will be gradual. From December 2025, verification will be mandatory in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands. From 2026 onwards, the rule will apply to all countries.

How reverification works

Users who wish to use chat must choose between two options. The first is to send a photo of an official document with date of birth. The second is to use the front camera of your cell phone or computer so that the AI, developed by the company Persona, can estimate age.

The system requests facial movements to confirm that the person is present. In the After analysis, the user is placed into age groups: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20 or over 21 years old.

Conversation restrictions by age group

The platform will limit conversations only between users on nearby roads. Uma children aged 12, for example, will be able to speak with users up to 15 years old, but not with those aged 16 or over.

Users over 13 years of age who disagree with the AI result may submit a document for correction. Parents with a linked account can also adjust their child’s age.

Measures already existing on the platform

Roblox already blocks the exchange of photos and personal information of children under 13 years old. The company uses human and automated moderation on texts and voice calls.

Experiences booked for over 18s require senior age verification. The facial data used in the new tool is deleted immediately after age classification.

Worldwide release schedule

Verification began as optional this Tuesday. In December, it becomes mandatory in the three pilot countries already mentioned.

Starting Q1 2026, all global users will need to prove their age to access chat. The company reported that the AI’s accuracy often varies by up to two years for people between the ages of 5 and 25.

Reactions and context of legal actions

The attorneys general of Kentucky, Louisiana and Florida have filed lawsuits or investigations against Roblox in 2025.

A virtual demonstration organized by the NGO ParentsTogether Action was scheduled for this Tuesday, demanding more protection for minors.
