Research published in the magazine Nature Aging, conducted by scientists from Universidade of Researchers analyzed thousands of molecules, including proteins, RNA and elements of the microbiome, revealing that molecular aging does not occur gradually and linearly.

The most significant changes are concentrated in two specific periods: around age 44 and age 60. At Nesses moments, around 81% of the molecules studied showed abrupt changes, affecting functions such as lipid, alcohol and caffeine metabolism, as well as processes linked to cardiovascular diseases, skin and muscles.

Initially, scientists considered that transformations at age 44 could be related to perimenopause in women. However, analyzes separated by sex showed similar patterns in men, indicating biological factors common to both genders.

  • Changes at age 44 involve a reduction in the ability to metabolize alcohol and caffeine.
  • Changes affect skin aging and increased risk of muscle injuries.
  • Increases are linked to molecules associated with cardiovascular problems.

Changes observed in the first peak

The researchers identified that, at the age of 44, intense variations occur in molecules related to the metabolism of substances such as alcohol, caffeine and lipids. Essas changes explain common complaints in this age group, such as greater difficulty recovering from nights drinking alcohol or increased sensitivity to caffeine.

Furthermore, there are impacts on the structure of the skin and muscles, contributing to loss of elasticity and a higher incidence of injuries. The risk of cardiovascular diseases also increases, with changes in components that regulate cholesterol and other lipids in the blood.

These transformations are not exclusive to one gender, reinforcing the need for health care at this stage of life.

Changes in the second acceleration period

By age 60, molecular changes affect carbohydrate metabolism, kidney function and immune regulation. Researchers observed a decline in the ability to process caffeine again, as well as increased vulnerability to infections and diseases such as type 2 diabetes.

The skin and muscles continue to be impacted, with accelerated loss of muscle mass, known as sarcopenia. Moléculas linked to cardiovascular and kidney problems present significant variations, in line with the observed increase in risks for these conditions at this age.

These patterns explain the more frequent emergence of physical frailty and greater susceptibility to chronic illnesses.

Biological factors and study limitations

The study highlights that aging occurs in waves, contradicting the traditional view of a constant process. Michael Snyder, professor of genetics at Stanford and senior author, emphasized that dramatic changes happen regardless of the class of molecules analyzed.

Although follow-up was longitudinal, with samples collected every few months, the number of participants was limited to 108, all living in Califórnia. Scientists point to the need for broader, longer-term research to confirm exact causes and explore lifestyle influences.

Factors such as physical activity and alcohol consumption can modulate the intensity of these waves.

Recommended habits to minimize impacts

Experts suggest adopting routines that strengthen the body before and during these critical periods. Priorizar quality sleep, with at least seven hours a night, helps regulate metabolic and immunological processes.

Reducing alcohol consumption preserves the ability to metabolize it, which naturally decreases during these phases. Aumentar protein intake, aiming for about 0.8 to 1 gram per kilogram of body weight, supports muscle maintenance.

  • Engage in regular exercise, including strength training.
  • Maintain adequate hydration to support kidney function.
  • Adopt a diet rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables.

Additional Prevention Strategies

Maintaining regular physical activity, especially with weights to preserve muscle mass, is essential in your 40s and 60s. Monitorar cholesterol and lipid levels in the blood allow early interventions against cardiovascular risks.

Drinking enough water helps the kidneys, whose efficiency declines during the second peak. Evitar eating excesses and prioritizing whole foods contribute to better carbohydrate metabolism.

These measures, combined, can mitigate the effects of identified molecular accelerations.

Benefits of healthy routines

Adopting these habits not only mitigates abrupt changes, but promotes healthier aging in general. Estudos supplements reinforce that lifestyle directly influences biological age, and can reduce the risk of associated diseases.

The researchers emphasize that early interventions, especially in middle age, enhance the body’s resilience. Manter balance between rest, nutrition and physical movement forms the basis for facing these phases with greater vitality.

The research paves the way for personalized approaches in preventative medicine.
