China has reaffirmed its dominant position in the global renewable energy sector by recording an unprecedented volume of installations over the past year. The country was responsible for more than half of all new wind and solar generation capacity added worldwide, a feat that significantly accelerates its decarbonization agenda and transforms the international energy landscape.

Massive investments and targeted government policies were the main drivers of this expansion. Regiões once considered unproductive, such as deserts and coastal areas, have been converted into vast centers of clean energy production, demonstrating the scale and speed of China’s energy transition. Esse pace is essential to achieving the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Despite exponential growth, the sector faced significant obstacles, mainly related to the integration of this new capacity into the national electricity grid. Contudo, the development of technological innovations and the modernization of transmission infrastructure have been crucial to gradually overcome these challenges and ensure the efficient use of generated energy.

Record expansion in installed capacity

The numbers achieved by China in 2025 established new historic milestones for the renewable energy sector. Apenas in the first eleven months of the year, the country added approximately 275 gigawatts (GW) in solar capacity, a volume that brings the accumulated total to levels never seen before. Essa expansion was concentrated in provinces such as Qinghai and Mongólia Interior, where gigantic photovoltaic parks were implemented in desert areas, optimizing land use and solar irradiation.

These large-scale projects have incorporated cutting-edge technologies to maximize efficiency, such as the use of bifacial solar panels, which capture sunlight on both sides and increase power generation in adverse weather conditions. The result was a structural inflection point in the country’s energy system: for the first time, the total capacity of renewable sources surpassed that of thermal sources, such as coal. In the wind segment, additions were also significant, totaling more than 50 GW in the first half of the year, driven both by onshore installations on high plateaus and by offshore parks on the east coast.

Technological advances in offshore turbines

A significant technical milestone was reached in early 2026 with the installation of the world’s first 20-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine, located in the province of Fujian. Desenvolvida by a consortium of leading companies, including Goldwind and

This technological achievement places China at the global forefront in terms of unit turbine power, surpassing international competitors. The installation in deep waters and the validation of its performance in real conditions, such as the strong winds characteristic of the coastal region, demonstrate Chinese dominance in marine engineering and the manufacturing of large equipment.

Other important innovations include the development of hybrid systems that combine wind generation with battery energy storage. A notable example is the 6 GW complex under construction in the province of Shanxi, which uses old deactivated coal mines for its implementation, combining the energy transition with the requalification of degraded industrial areas.

Challenges in integrating into the electrical grid

The accelerated growth in renewable energy generation has brought with it an increase in the “curtailment” rate, a technical term for the waste of energy that occurs when production exceeds transmission capacity or grid demand. Durante the first half of 2025, some provinces recorded solar energy waste rates that reached 6.6%, a direct reflection of limitations in drainage infrastructure. Regiões from the northwest, large producers of clean energy, faced the greatest difficulties in transporting the electricity generated to the large consumer centers in the east of the country.

In response, investments in modernizing the electricity grid grew 22% in the same period. The main focus was the construction of new ultra-high voltage transmission lines and the implementation of smart grid technologies. Essas measures are designed to reduce technical losses, improve system flexibility and increase the absorption capacity of intermittent energy sources such as solar and wind.

Industry experts point out that achieving a sustainable balance between supply and demand will require continuous adjustments to energy dispatch policies. Reformas are already being implemented to encourage local consumption of renewable energy in large industrial hubs, creating a more dynamic and decentralized market.

This approach aims not only to optimize the use of installed capacity, but also to strengthen the resilience of the national electricity system. Coordination between generation expansion and grid strengthening is seen as key to sustaining the growth rate of renewables without compromising the stability of energy supply for the world’s second largest economy. The integration of more accurate weather forecasting systems also plays a key role in this process.

Hybrid projects in desert regions

The transformation of vast desert areas into electricity production centers gained scale under the guidance of the 14th Plano Quinquenal of the China. Complexos energy sources that integrate wind and solar generation are being developed on a large scale, with bases that, combined, approach 100 GW of capacity. Esses gigantic projects are strategically designed to include energy storage systems, which help stabilize intermittent production and ensure a more constant supply to the grid.

The hybrid approach allows for more continuous operation, taking advantage of the complementarity between sources: solar energy is generated during the day and wind energy often peaks at night. Isso reduces dependence on fossil fuel plants to act as backup. The projects currently under construction envisage electricity generation equivalent to the consumption of medium-sized European countries, highlighting the ambition and scale of the initiative.

  • Solar panels equipped with automatic tracking systems (trackers) increase yield by up to 20% by following the sun’s position throughout the day.
  • Wind turbines specially adapted to operate in variable wind conditions optimize production in plateau and desert regions.
  • Gigawatt-hour scale battery systems are integrated to ensure power supply during evening peak demand or on days without sun and wind.

Investments in energy storage

The development of large-scale energy storage systems has become a strategic priority to support the exponential growth of renewable sources. Apenas in 2025, battery storage capacity installed in specific complexes exceeded 3.4 gigawatt-hours. Essa infrastructure is essential to mitigate the variability of wind and solar generation, storing excess energy produced at times of low demand to release it when consumption increases.

Chinese strategies are inspired by successful international models, such as the one implemented in Califórnia, but adapted to the scale and needs of their own market. The continuous expansion of storage capacity is gradually reducing the need to keep thermoelectric plants operating as a strategic reserve, which directly contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Investments in new battery technologies such as solid-state and flow batteries have also grown significantly, with local companies dominating the global supply chain for these essential components.

International implications and trade

Chinese dominance in the production of renewable energy equipment, such as solar panels and wind turbines, has generated trade tensions throughout 2025, with the country holding more than 80% of the world’s manufacturing capacity for key components. Medidas protectionist measures, such as the imposition of tariff barriers by economic blocs such as União Europeia, were implemented in response to the large volume of Chinese exports, which were seen as a threat to local industry.

Domestically, the Chinese government adjusted subsidy policies to balance the domestic market and avoid overproduction. Apesar Despite trade frictions, investments by Chinese companies in renewable energy projects abroad continued to grow, expanding global installed capacity. Parcerias established in developing countries, especially in Ásia, África and América Latina, have accelerated the energy transition in these regions, strengthening the influence of China in climate diplomacy and the international supply chain.

Progress towards carbon neutrality

The advances recorded in 2025 have brought China decisively closer to meeting its climate goals, established to peak emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. At certain times of the year, the combined installed capacity of wind and solar energy exceeded the 1.6 terawatts (TW) mark. Renewable sources accounted for more than 90% of all new power additions to the country’s electrical system, a clear indicator of the direction of its energy matrix.

Clean energy generation recorded a 25% growth in specific months when compared to the previous year, a result that reflects the maturation of large projects initiated in previous years. The government’s long-term policies continue to prioritize the gradual decarbonization of the economy, with positive effects extending to energy-intensive industrial sectors, which are being encouraged to adopt cleaner energy sources. Chinese renewable expansion, due to its scale, directly influences the global emissions scenario, making the country an indispensable actor for the success of international climate agreements.
