A new milestone in the console modding community has been reached with the completion of a fully portable PlayStation 4 Slim. The project, developed by an enthusiast known online as wewillmakeitnow, integrates all of the desktop console’s hardware into a compact body, allowing the full library of PS4 games to run natively, without any dependency on an internet connection or streaming services.

The creation stands out for its complete operational autonomy, differentiating itself from official accessories such as the PlayStation Portal, which works exclusively via streaming from a base console. Este home device, on the other hand, renders demanding games like God of War Ragnarok and Elden Ring directly on its internal hardware, offering an authentic, network latency-free mobile gaming experience.

After months of development and refinement, the result is a robust device that combines high-performance components with custom engineering solutions. The project not only demonstrates the technical feasibility of miniaturizing eighth-generation console hardware, but also fuels discussion about the growing demand for powerful portable devices in the gaming market.

The technical specifications of the custom console

The heart of the device is a 7-inch OLED screen with native 1080p resolution, ensuring vibrant colors, deep blacks and a low response time, essential for action games. Power is provided by a set of six lithium-ion batteries, which add up to a total capacity of approximately 130 Wh. Essa configuration allows autonomy ranging from 1.5 hours, when running AAA titles with intense graphics, to up to three hours in more moderate usage scenarios. The cooling system was one of the areas of greatest focus, using an ESP32 microcontroller to monitor temperatures in real time and dynamically adjust fan speeds. Todo the hardware assembly is protected by a digitally designed casing manufactured using 3D printing technology in ABS plastic, a material known for its heat resistance and structural durability, ensuring the integrity of the device during intense use.

The challenge of miniaturizing original hardware

The most complex and daring stage of the project consisted of physically modifying the original PS4 Slim motherboard. The creator performed precise cutting to remove sections that were considered non-essential for portable operation, such as circuitry related to the Blu-ray reader. Esse, an extremely delicate process, required the reconstruction of dozens of tiny tracks to ensure that all vital functions, such as the processor, GPU and memory, remained operational. The reduction in board size was essential to free up the internal space necessary to accommodate the screen, batteries and customized cooling system within a handheld format.

To manage the heat generated by the console’s APU, which was not designed to operate in such a confined space, an active and intelligent cooling solution was implemented. The ESP32 microcontroller runs custom firmware that reads data from multiple temperature sensors positioned at critical points on the board. Based on these readings, it automatically adjusts fan speed to keep the system within safe operating limits. Além Additionally, the firmware includes safety protocols that automatically turn off the console if the temperature exceeds a critical threshold or the battery level drops dangerously low, protecting the hardware from permanent damage.

Functional design and connectivity options

The external design was carefully planned to balance the need to house bulky components with the ergonomics of a portable device. The 3D-printed case was shaped to provide a comfortable grip, integrating parts of a DualShock 4 controller to ensure the layout of buttons and analog sticks was familiar to PlayStation players.

Thinking about versatility, the device was equipped with an HDMI output port. Essa functionality allows the console to be connected to a television or external monitor, transforming it into a traditional tabletop gaming station and taking advantage of Full HD resolution on a larger screen without any loss of performance.

Connectivity is expanded through three USB-C ports, each with a specific function. One of them is dedicated to recharging the robust battery pack, another allows the connection of peripherals such as additional controls or external storage units, and the third is used for configuring and programming the ESP32 microcontroller that manages the thermal system.

This combination of features makes the device a true hybrid. Ele works perfectly as a portable console for gaming anywhere, but also offers the flexibility to be used as a traditional desktop console, all without relying on a network connection for its main functionality.

Battery life in different usage scenarios

Power management is one of the critical points in any portable device, and this project was no different. Tests carried out by the creator indicate that, when running graphically demanding games that demand high processing power, the 130 Wh battery can sustain around an hour and a half of continuous gaming.

For less intensive titles, such as independent games or when using the console for menu navigation and other light tasks, autonomy can be extended to up to three hours. The device is also designed to allow use while connected to a power source, eliminating time constraints for longer gaming sessions at home.

Differences in relation to the PlayStation Portal and other portables

The main advantage of this DIY project over the Sony’s PlayStation Portal is its local processing capabilities. Enquanto the official accessory is entirely dependent on a stable Wi-Fi connection to stream games from a PS5, this portable PS4 runs its entire library natively, offering a lag-free and fully functional experience in offline mode.

The concept is close to what rumors suggest for future market consoles, such as the successor to the Nintendo Switch, which seeks to combine portability with performance comparable to that of previous generation table consoles. Este project materializes this idea, proving that it is possible to run the PS4’s vast catalog in a format that can be taken anywhere.

Although not the first to attempt to create a portable PS4, this version stands out for its design refinements, system stability and the integration of a high-quality OLED screen. Ele represents a significant evolution within the modding scene, one that continues to push the limits of what is possible with consumer hardware.

Repercussion on the modding and gaming community

Since details of the project were shared on online forums like Reddit, the response has been extremely positive. Membros from the gaming community and hardware enthusiasts praised the complexity of the engineering involved, highlighting the skill and patience required to carry out modifications to the motherboard and integrate all systems harmoniously.

The original post quickly accumulated thousands of interactions, generating in-depth discussions about the technical challenges and the potential for future similar projects. Muitos users expressed the desire for major manufacturers to be inspired by creations like this to develop official products that meet the growing demand for portable, uncompromising gaming experiences.

A non-commercial passion project

The creator of the portable PS4 Slim made a point of highlighting that the device is a personal project, born from a technical challenge and passion for games and electronics. Não there are plans for mass production or for the sale of units, being a unique piece that serves as a testament to the creativity and capacity for innovation present in the modding community.
