Sony advances in portable console project capable of playing PlayStation 5 games natively
The Japanese electronic entertainment giant is stepping up its efforts to re-enter the mobile hardware market with a rugged, standalone device. Recent Informações reports indicate that Sony is working on developing a new portable system, internally dubbed “Project Canis”, designed to run high-fidelity games without relying on cloud processing or remote streaming.
This strategic move aims to position the company as a direct competitor of consolidated devices, such as the Steam Deck of the Valve and the successors of the Nintendo Switch line. Diferente of the PlayStation Portal, which serves only as a second screen via Wi-Fi, the new device promises to bring native processing, using advanced components to guarantee satisfactory performance in demanding titles.
The focus of the project is on creating an ecosystem where portability does not mean sacrificing the quality of large productions. The engineering behind the device seeks to balance energy efficiency with graphics power, allowing gamers to take their game libraries anywhere with a fluid experience.
Partnership with AMD and technical specifications
To enable this technological leap, Sony would be collaborating closely with AMD in the development of a customized Unidade of Processamento Acelerado (APU). The objective is to create a chip capable of running PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles, maintaining the system’s compatibility and stability.
It is speculated that the hardware will use high-speed memories to support the complex textures of current games. The system architecture is being designed to ensure that the device is not just an accessory, but a central platform in the brand’s strategy for the coming years.
In addition to compatibility with current consoles, the chip design provides for future integration with the eventual PlayStation 6.
Full integration with the digital library
One of the biggest differences of “Project Canis” will be its native integration with the PlayStation Network. Users will have immediate access to digital games already purchased on their accounts, eliminating the need to repurchase titles for the portable version. The system must implement “cross-save” and “cross-buy” functionalities automatically and transparently.
This means that progress made on the desktop console can be continued on the laptop exactly where it left off, and vice versa. Essa continuity is seen as essential to maintain the engagement of players, who are increasingly seeking greater flexibility in how and where they consume their favorite games.
Pricing strategy and launch window
Market analysts point out that the launch of the device is scheduled to take place in 2027. Essa time window allows battery and processor technology to mature enough to deliver the necessary autonomy and power at a competitive price for the end consumer.
In terms of values, the estimate is that the console will hit the market costing between 399 and 499 dollars. The Essa price range puts it in direct competition with premium models from other notebooks, but with the exclusive advantage of running Sony’s established franchises natively.
The design of the device must follow the modern visual identity of the PlayStation 5 line, prioritizing ergonomics and immersion. The expectation is that the portable will fill the gap left by the PlayStation Vita, but with an execution much more in line with current demands for performance and convenience.
