Exploration of the cosmos reached a new level of precision in October 2025, when Administração Espacial Nacional of China (CNSA) released high-resolution visual records of comet 3I/ATLAS. The images were captured by the Tianwen-1 probe, which operates in the orbit of Marte, marking the first time in history that an object of interstellar origin is photographed from another planet in Sistema Solar. The event represents a significant technical advance for planetary astronomy.

The recording took place at an approximate distance of 30 million kilometers from the celestial body, requiring meticulous planning and highly complex maneuvers. The data obtained provides crucial information for the global scientific community, allowing in-depth study of the trajectory and composition of visitors that originated outside the vicinity of Sol. The object’s passage mobilized several space agencies, resulting in an international collaborative effort to cross-reference information.

Interstellar Visitor Features

Comet 3I/ATLAS is the third object confirmed with an origin external to our system, following the discoveries of ‘Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. Sua sharp hyperbolic orbit served as the main evidence that it does not belong to our stellar system and is just passing through. About 5.6 kilometers wide and traveling at an impressive speed of 58 kilometers per second, its analysis offers valuable clues about the formation of planetary systems in other regions of Via Láctea.

The photographs revealed by CNSA clearly show the rocky, frozen nucleus of the comet, surrounded by a coma — the cloud of gas and dust generated by the sublimation of the ice. The comet’s tail, formed by particles ejected by solar radiation pressure, extended approximately 56,000 kilometers, positioned in the opposite direction to Sol during observations. Análises Preliminary spectra suggest the presence of water ice, carbon dioxide and weaker signals of carbon monoxide.

Technical challenges and mission adaptation

To carry out the recording, the mission’s engineering team used the HiRIC high-resolution camera, installed on board Tianwen-1. The equipment, originally designed for detailed mapping of the Martian surface, was adapted to track a small, fast, faintly glowing target in vast space. Simulações extensive exposure times were required to set extremely short exposure times, ensuring the sharpness of the images transmitted to the control center at Pequim.

In addition to China, other nations participated in the monitoring. Agência Espacial Europeia (ESA) used the Mars Express and ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter probes to analyze gaseous emissions from the coma. Simultaneamente, NASA directed Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to capture supplemental data while rovers on the surface attempted to detect the object. Essa triangulation of data allowed a three-dimensional view of the comet’s activity, refining models about its structure and rotation.

Legacy for future exploration

The success of the operation with 3I/ATLAS validates essential technologies for the next steps of the Chinese space program. The experience strengthens planning for the exploration of smaller bodies in Sistema Solar, one of the CNSA’s focuses for the next decade. The Tianwen-2 mission, launched in May 2025, directly benefits from this learning, with objectives that include collecting samples from asteroids close to Terra and studying comets in the main belt.

Since its launch in July 2020, the Tianwen-1 mission has been a milestone, having successfully inserted an orbiter, a lander and the Zhurong rover into Marte. The rover operated on the plain of Utopia Planitia, collecting vital geological data, while the orbiter continues to map the planet and study its poles. The ability to redirect instruments to targets of opportunity, such as interstellar comets, demonstrates the versatility and robustness of contemporary space operations.
